Music Hall songs on CD

A lot of Ray Davis songs were influenced by Music Hall. Bob Davenport covers Music Hall songs. Does anyone know any CDs that cover this type of music?

Wow, what a great question. Bit like an iceberg I suspect, little question with enormous repercussions! The US equivalent of Music Hall is Vaudeville. Geordie legend Alan Price (The Animals) also wrote many songs in the Music Hall tradition, as did Chas n' Dave ... so many others. There must be tons of CDs but I can't think of a genre compilation.

The Kingston Trio covered "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm" on their Sold Out lp. It was in the repertoire of Stanley Holloway (Alfred Doolittle in the Lerner and Loewe My Fair Lady)

There are cds featuring the original music hall artists like Marie Lloyd, Little Titch, Harry Champion, George Robey etc, Search for them and you'll find some gems.
Not in stereo though.

and
Cockney Kings of Music Hall

on Saydisc Records ( http;//www.saydisc.com ) are pretty good and feature plenty of the best known performers.

Plenty of Music Hall CD's here. Excellent transfers from the original 78's.

I bought some very good cd's of music hall artists last June from our own Mudcat local company, Camsco. You might want to click the link at the top of the page and ask there.

There was, at one time, an album of Music Hall songs with John Roberts, Tony Barrand and Murray Callahan, among others. I'm not sure it every came out on CD, though.

Good luck!

Evergreen, part of This England magazine, has quite a few original Music Hall CDs.

County Vaudeville, an Ontario duo, does almost exclusively music hall songs. They don't seem to have a web site but at this site you will find a bit of a write up and an email address to contact them. They have at least 3 albums.

Try Topic Record Label in London for the real thing by people such as Billy Bennett (almost a a Gentleman).

They do have a website but can't recall it at present.

Hi, i am looking for a scottish cd compilation with the song "The Glasgow Barrowlands" on it sung by either Eddi Reader or another. It is a very funny song and holds special memories for me! Can anyone help me please????

Kindest Regards

Oh, it was at the Glasgow Barrowlands, he asked me for a dance.
I knew he was a fly man but I had to take a chance.
The mirror ball was sparkling. The band played 'The Last Waltz'.
And after the dance was over, he asked to take me home.

CHORUS: Dup dar di di de rah loolah, etc

Oh, it was at the Glasgow Barrowlands, into his arms I fell.
He promised me silks and satins, and a diamond ring as well.
I got no silks and satins. I got no diamond ring.
All I got was a cradle for to rock the baby in! CHORUS

Now listen, all you good girls, and take a tip from me:
Never let a chancer, an inch above yer knee!
