Movies on blacklisting

As some of you may know, I'm homeschooling my 16-yr-old stepson. Right now, we're covering the 1950's in American History, and Josh thinks this period is "boring." I thought the Glencoe American History text did a great job of telling the story of Joe McCarthy and Aleger Hiss and the Rosenbergs, but Josh isn't impressed,.
Can anybody suggest movies about this period that will make it more interesting for Josh? I'm especially interested in movies about blacklisting. The best we've seen so far was Jim Carrey in The Majestic.

How about "The Front" with Woddy Allen and Zero Mostel ? That was just on the other night.

The movie Bridge over the River Kwai was written by an author who was blacklisted by McCarthy. They used a different name to make the movie.

Good idea, Clinton. Since he was born, Josh has been friends and movie-watching buddies with the History Department chair of the local community college. I'll have him call her.

I did a search of the word "blacklist" at Allmovie.com and came up with this list :

http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=3:K|||392

It includes "Guilty By Suspicion" with Robert DeNiro and "The Way We Were" which I've never seen.

Joe,

I don't know how many theaters this one made it to, but you might want to check out "Good Night And Good Luck." Supposedly very good.

Not specifically about blacklisting; at least, not just blacklisting. It's about Edward R. Murrow taking on McCarthy and his whole agenda.

But you might pick up some good material.

The author of the Investigator was a radio play about McCarthy and was relased as an LP without any credits. The author went on to write Life of Riley for TV but his blacklisting caught up with him.

Maybe looking at the times through the artistic viewpoint of two men that were involved might help Joe.
Arthur Miller defied the HUAC.
His two plays 'the Crucible" and "A view from the Bridge". Which express his feelings about that era. Perhaps reading these Plays might help see things through Miller's eyes. I know there was a 1990ish film based on the Crucible but it was awful but there maybe another earlier Film. Ill check.
The there was Elia Kazan. he named names to the HUAC, perhaps "On the Waterfront" would give a glimpse into how Kazan viewed the Witchhunt.
The Salem Witch Trails, to me, might be an interesting way to look at the HUAC
Just a thought.
Sounds like a good project:)

Hi Joe
You could also give an example of the same process & attempts made today for comparisons, Examples. "Why We Fight" out presently but I can't get to see it & the attempts to block Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11". You could also expand it to the other ares of preforming arts. Good Luck
