Lyr Req: Sally's Got Mud Between Her Toes

Hello
I am looking for any words to the old time tune "Sally's Got Mud Between Her Toes", which I understand was a song once, it start's out: "Here comes Sally down the road, she's got mud between her toes..." This may be a difficult one, since all sources of the tune point to Jeff Titon's 1976 recordings of Kentucky fiddler Pat Kingery and little is known of the words from this source.

Thread drift:

Sally sure did get around. She may have had mud between her toes {meaning been a country girl?}, but at some point she moved to the big city-as documented by these verses:

Sally got a house in Baltimo',
Baltimo', Baltimo'
Sally got a house in Baltimo'
And it's three stories high

Sally got a house in Baltimo',
Baltimo', Baltimo'
Sally got a house in Baltimo'
An' it's full of chicken pie

-snip-

These are floating verses used in a number of songs including this one:

Ridin' in the buggy, Miss Mary Jane
Miss Mary Jane, Miss Mary Jane
Ridin' in the buggy, Miss Mary Jane
I'm a long way from home

(chorus)
Who moan for me?
Who moan for me?
Who moan for me, my darlin'?
Who moan for me?

[sorry I can't get the clicky thingy to work right now]

BTW, are there any lyrics to Sally's Got Mud Between Her Toes?

I looked for the lyrics using the Mudcat Search engine and Google to find the lyrics, but struck out.

And I take it that breakdown=old timey up-tempo fiddler tune, right? or wrong?

Many thanks to PEACE for the reference to the very interesting 2002 Silberberg book, but since Kingery is an 'old guy from Kentucky' I think I'll go on believing that he somehow conveyed the tune and fragment of companion lyrick till I learn otherwise.

The Sally lyrics presented by Azizi are interesting, and I imagine that there are lot's of songs about 'her' but it doesn't quite get to the mud of it all, so the question is still posed, may the thread continue. Didn't I say it would be tough...

Sorry to ask this, but the machine I'm on has no sound available. Are there any lyrics on the sound bite on that link?

That link is just instrumental.

May the thread continue-muddy and all.

You're welcome, Peace.

And thanks to GUEST,karl franzen for hippin me to this song.

I asked my friend Google to help me find that song's words, but so far he {she? it?} is drawin a blank. Maybe "Sally's Got Mud Between Her Toes" aint got no words.

Well, somebody should do something about that.

Any song writers out there? Hmmm?

Well, GUEST,karl franzen says that this song has words. And karl knows, right?

So then what comes after that line Karl shared?

"Here comes Sally down the road, she's got mud between her toes"

BTW-I'm bettin this was an African American song that ripped on country gals. I've read other songs that "talked about" country women having big feet. I think that was part of the urban is better than country "rip" genre {rip=insult}.

So maybe "big feet" could be part of the song's lyrics....

Just sayin....

PS Karl--I don't doubt there are words--didn't mean to imply that.

Here are both verses to Sally's got mud between her toes. I got them and the tune from Bruce Greene who got them from an old kentucky fiddler named Pat Kingery.

"Here comes Sally down the row, she's got mud between her toes."
Though her face is pretty as a pear, she's got a yellow ribbon in her hair."'

The above is part an e-mail I just received from Don Pedi.

Thank you for the complete couplet! That is a real find. maybe someday more will be revealed, but that is enough to bring the song to life.

In reply to the request for somebody to write lyrics, I offer the following:

SALLY'S GOT MUD BETWEEN HER TOES

First verse traditional. Chorus and remaining verses by Bob Coltman. Based on tune from Uncle Dave Dougherty and the Trough Sloppers, I'm Getting Happy CD. Source: Pat Kingery, Nobab, southern Kentucky.

Here comes Sally down the road,
She's got mud between her toes,
Though her face is pretty as a pear,
She's got a yellow ribbon in her hair.

    CHO
    Sal, Sal, don't be slow,
You love me, you know it's so,
All I ask, the good Lord knows,
Shake that mud from 'tween your toes.

Here she comes and yon she goes,
She don't wear no fancy clothes,
She don't carry no long stem rose,
She's got mud between her toes.

Asked her would she marry me,
She says, "Not immediately,"
But I noticed her with a hose
Washin' mud from 'tween her toes.
