1950's Magazine 'Hit Parade'

Does anyone recall a magazine that was published in the 1950's called "Hit Parade" that published the lyrics to the most popular songs of the day?

A friend is looking for copies for her mother. Her mother says she used to get this magazine, kept all her copies and now can't find them.

If memory serves, it was called "Hit Parader" (note the "r" on the end"). I think it continued to be published into the 1970s, and maybe even beyond that.

I remember a magazine in the 1960s called 'Parade' that had pictures of ladies' bosoms in. It became a strong playground currency, and the cigarette exchange rate was very favourable.

Actually, there was a Hit Parade, and a Hit Parader. I own one copy of each, along with Song Hits, National Song Magazine, Broadcast Songs, and Sing Songs... all dated 40's to 50's.   Not wanting to part with them, however.

I remember the mag very well; indeed, I was thinking recently of looking on Ebay to try to get hold of some. I always associate that mag with the 50s "easy listening" period of popular music, before rock'n'roll began to dominate.

Thanks to All. She has found 3 copies on e-bay, as well as a little more info. It was called "Hit Parade" until 1959 or 1960, then someone bought it out and added the 'r' to the name.

Great to be reminded of this magazine. I bought a copy every week during the 40's and 50's and knew just about every song that hit the top 40. My family always listened to the Hit Parade on the radio every week to see which song was going to be #1, and then watched the program on TV later. The program became outmoded when rock and roll came in because no one could stomach the sanitized versions of rock and roll.

I wrote a song about that time in my life with the chorus:

"And the three mile Crick was four miles long, back when I was young
And I knew the words to every song known to the human tongue."

Have between 25 and 30 of them. Still love to look now and then. Was thinking of selling them on e-bay but not convinced as yet.

OK, so what was the difference between "Hit Parade" and "Your Hit Parade"?

Joe - Your Hit Parade was a weekly radio and, later, TV show which purported to to perform the top 7 (on TV) songs of the week as indicated by record sales, sheet music sales, and juke box plays of that week.
Frank Sinatra was one of the performers for a short period in the 1940s on the radio version. The TV show, called Your Lucky Strike Hit Parade during much of its run was sponsored by a cigarette company...the eponymous Lucky Strikes. To fill the allotted time there were always a couple of Lucky Strike extras, songs that were not one of the hits. TV performers included Snooky Lanson, Russell Arms, Dorothy Collins and Giselle MacKenzie; others I have forgotten. The Lucky Strike Orchestra--notice how they always got their name in there--was conducted by Raymond Scott. Scott was the composer of the "Looney Tunes" tune, and really innovative popular, and not so popular, dance music before this gig. I commend his website to you. Your Hit Parade went off TV in the mid-1950s; I mean, who could perform Sh-Boom every week, or Oop Shoop?

P.S. I am not a baby boomer, having been born a couple of years before our entry into WWTwo, the Big One, to quote Herbert Gillis. I am now well into living in my 8th decade, but I feel sooo young.

My partner, who was associate editor of Hit Parader, Song Hits, Country Song Round-up, Rhythm & Blues and Rock'n'Roll magazines in the early 60s, assures me that Hit Parader always had the "r" at the end of its name. The other magazine may therefore be a different species! (could it be a Brit version, like Sing! was to Sing Out!?).

The parent company of Hit Parader was Charlton Publications of Derby, Connecticut. It was founded in the 1940s, and published lyrics for the homesick GIs during WWII.

Elizabeth, you may have figured by now that the magazine contained the words to the popular songs of the day as well as articles on artists and such and ads that would give you a little picture of the times. Seems like there were also top ten play lists from radio stations around the country. This was in the days before Clear Channel Communications and the top ten in New York might only have two or three songs from the top ten in Atlanta or Dallas.

Hit Parade magazine was printed in Derby,CT at Charlton Press and Publishing. They also P$P'd a rythm &blues mag and a country songs mag.The story I remember was it started in NYC in the early 1900's with a printed sheet of "Shuffle off to Buffalo" sold on the street in the theater district. My recollection goes back to the late 40's early 50's.

Google Books has posted back issues of Life magazine, but I'd bet that copyright issues would keep them from digitizing Hit Parader. But I found lots of references to the mag in Google Books. I'm hoping that I'll soon be able to check out Google Books from my library. Hit Parader and Mad Magazine were my favorites in the blissful '50's!
