The Marines land at Iwo Jima on 2/19/1945

          Well they battled up Iwo Jima Hill - two hundred and fifty men,
          But only twenty-seven lived to walk back down again;
          When the fight was over and Old Glory raised,
          Among the men who held it high was the [Pima] Indian - Ira Hayes.

There were at least two versions of Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima, by The Sons of the Pioneers and byBob Wills and his Texas Playboys.

I certainly remember the Sons version on the juke box of my Dad's tavern in 1945. It only existed in my mind for many years until I got the Bob Wills version.
