19 Feb 06 - 12:10 PM (#1672909) Subject: Open Door Extravaganza 10: March 19 2006 From: Bernard (website) Extravaganza 10 Programme March 19th 2006 FREE All Day Singaround CLUB ROOM CONCERTS All Day Sunday from 2:00pm: £10.00 Steve Turner Bill Whaley & Dave Fletcher Dave Webber & Anni Fentiman Now we have moved to the Royal Oak (A62 opposite Werneth Park, Oldham), there isn't enough room in our Club Room to run our Extravaganza in its past format, so we will remove the tables from the club room and set out concert-style seating. This means there will be limited tickets available, but there may be an extra seat or two available on the day. Tickets only guarantee admission to a concert if you arrive before the guest starts their first spot (i.e. during the Club Floor Spot or before). After then, any empty seats will be filled if there are people waiting. There will be a FREE all day singaround in one of the other rooms, so why not come along for the singaround if you're not interested in the concerts?! Food will also be available, in the form of filled barms and hotpot - with vegetarian options, too. Hope to see you there!! |

Don't expect him to be doing the material he did fifteen years ago, though - he has made a deliberate decision to use a new repertoire. |

14 Mar 06 - 12:39 PM (#1693347) Subject: RE: Open Door Extravaganza 10: March 19 2006 From: Matthew Edwards I'm looking forward to this event on Sunday, but I'm now a little worried after seeing Bernard's message in response to a request for some tickets:- "...just ring Pauline or John on 0161 681 3618. They'll be only too pleased to flog you some!!" Has the Extravaganza changed format since I last attended? Is flogging now part of the show? Will there be a whip round as well? :-) |

14 Mar 06 - 03:04 PM (#1693512) Subject: RE: Open Door Extravaganza 10: March 19 2006 From: Bernard Indeed it has, Matthew! Flagellation and other forms of torture are now compulsory!! ;o) Not only will there be a whip round, but I will be wearing stockings and suspenders... and a basque... ooooh! I'm getting all unnecessary just thinking about it!! |

20 Mar 06 - 08:43 AM (#1698550) Subject: RE: Open Door Extravaganza 10: March 19 2006 From: Bernard Thanks, Ali - nice to see you and Geoff there! Our guests were brilliant, but once again they were somewhat eclipsed by another appearance of a star of the future... young Patrick! That lad has been playing melodeon for eighteen months, now, and is so smooth it's unreal! He's now sporting a very expensive Castagnari as well as his beloved Hohner G/D pokerwork, and plays like a seasoned professional. He's even learned the art of disgusing slips so they look as if they were intentional!! He first took up playing in the middle of the field at Cropredy in 2004, where he met up with our Pauline and John. They invited him (and family!) to our Extravaganza 7, where he bowled us all over by how proficient he had become in just a couple of months... I quote Bill Whaley... 'He makes you sick!' I'll post more later - and our website will be updated - with pictures! - in the next couple of days. |

23 Mar 06 - 11:15 AM (#1701069) Subject: RE: Open Door Extravaganza 10: March 19 2006 From: Matthew Edwards Indeed, congratulations to Pauline, Bernard, and John and all at the Open Door for another excellent Extravaganza! Dave Webber described the effect of the heat in the small room as providing his first experience of a "boil-in-the-bag folk club"! Nevertheless the intimacy of the occasion contributed greatly to its success, and I think all the artists benefitted from their close encounter with such an appreciative audience. It was good to hear Steve Turner, who surely deserves a campaign medal for his Napoleonic narrative songs. I enjoyed Farewell to the Gold and other songs from Paul Metsers; and Steve also told some great stories about his tour to New Zealand and Australia. His forthcoming CD on Fellside should be well worth hearing. Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher were in great form; Bill's wit was tinder dry in the atmosphere, and his brand new electronic accordian was a most formidable instrument. Lots of lovely Lincolnshire songs! Dave and Anni could be relied on to deliver a Grand Finale, and they didn't disappoint. They have voices to die for, and the interplay of their very different accents is wonderful. I liked their treatment of Pass The Jug Round, though perhaps the interjection of a few yelps and hollers in the chorus would add a touch of Cumbrian colour! The floor spots all performed to a high standard, and credit to the Open Door for providing a platform for young Patrick to perform. I expect we will hear a great deal more from this young man! Bernard's traffic light controls at the door were much admired too! |
