09 Mar 06 - 11:24 AM (#1689261) Subject: RE: Session near Aberdare 1 April From: Splott Man It's one of those sessions that goes with the flow of who is there. So singing will be in evidence. Splott is a district of Cardiff where I lived for 20 years. It's not a unique name, there are at least 4 other places with Splott in their name, in south Wales and in Somerset. But it has a lovely ring to it, sounds like it was dropped from a great height on a wet day. |

13 Mar 06 - 05:04 AM (#1691804) Subject: RE: Session near Aberdare 1 April From: GUEST,Dr Price Just doing my bit to flag up the session! Splott Man, I was quoting Pete Meazey, the writer who used to play with Mabsant - he owned a Welsh bookshop called Siop y Triban, in the arcade at the bottom of Cardiff High Street, and he published a joint pamphlet of raucous political ballads, called Broadsides, with Meic Stephens and Denis O'Neill. Mabsant did a tour of Brittany, and Pete never came back - he vowed to become a Breton, or something like that. I last heard of him when he was living in Pleyber-Christ, just to the south of Morlaix. Among Pete's verses were: Nothing could be finer than to live in Rhiwbina 'Tis one step up the ladder before moving to Radyr 'ark, 'ark, the lark in Victoria Park And the moon, nature's lantern Aglow over Canton I'd always assumed they were Pete's verses, but WHO did write them? Like other 60s and 70s stuff, they got lost in the mists of Cardiff folklore - but it would interesting to place a name. By the way, Pete's ex-wife, Nell, took the photograph which was to grace Calennig's debut album, in her living room! |

15 Mar 06 - 07:38 PM (#1694624) Subject: RE: Session near Aberdare 1 April From: GUEST Woss all iss "Victoria Park" stuff? You rreelly local or wha'? I alliz tort ih wuz:- "'Aaark, 'aaark de laaark In Caaardiff Aaarms Paaark" sose we cud learn people 'ow to talk Caaardiff proper, like. Ahem, note to the bemused non-local reader, Cardiff (and Barry) people have a rather distinctive way of enunciation when it comes to words containing the letter "a". Think of the way that Liverpudlians say "Arrite, arrite, carm down", then add a sort of Welsh accent and then morph it for a hundred years or so . . . and you still won't be getting it quite right. 16 Mar 06 - 04:32 AM (#1694942) Subject: RE: Session near Aberdare 1 April From: GUEST,Dr Price Alas, I'm from Llantrisant ("the hole with the Mint") so I couldn't taaalk proper Kaaardiff like - though I spent 19 years as a journalist down the Echo, in Thompson 'Ouse, like. Victoria Park is in the outskirts of Canton, where the residents could stare longingly across the distance to their promised land - Llandaff! It's genteel, like. Kaaardiff Arms Paaark is a popular mecca for rugby fans - it's the same difference, but the urban folk tradition has popularised it. By the way, Frank Hennessey (of BBC Wales' Celtic Heartbeat fame)brought up the question of the song "Llandaff", and played the Irish qroup Cran's recording of "Laugh And Half Daft" (a smoothed-out folk version of "Llandaff".) I heard the Irish singer Brian Mullen sing "Llandaff" a long time ago, and I was in The Ship And Pilot when I heard this woman sing "Llandaff". I think I'll start a new thread... |
