Subject: happy? – Feb 27 (Esther Levitt Library)
From: Abby Sale

During PLO protracted shelling of the town of Marjayoun, Lebanon which targeted the easiest sites- the school & library, Marjayoun school lost its library, leaving barely a book in the town. Nothing for the children to study.

A certain journalist, Tinker Sale, on assignment in the area January 1982 and present (and ducking shells) when the library was destroyed, learned from shaken local officials that this loss was considered the most pressing social problem - not living conditions, religion, or even the continuing daily shelling.

Tinker promised to fix this and ultimately, aided by many, a new library (seeded with 16,000 volumes in five languages) was established there.

The "Sons of Esther Levitt-Sa'ad Hadaad Memorial Library" opened on 2/27/1984.

Without all the women, now; where would we be?
        Working and caring throughout history
Their hands on the plow, but their stories untold,
So here's to the women, who shouldered the load!
The wilderness held you in the palm of her hand,
It took more than muscle to settle this land,
Women together went straight to the task
With schools and libraries -- a city at last.
