28 Feb 06 - 12:16 PM (#1681229) Subject: Obit: Sad death of Linda Smith 28 Feb 06 From: John MacKenzie Sadly the comedienne Linda Smith has died from ovarian cancer at the age of 48. Condolences to her family and to all who like me used to perk up when it was announced she was going to be on a forthcoming programme. A very funny lady. Giok |

28 Feb 06 - 03:07 PM (#1681466) Subject: RE: Obit: Sad death of Linda Smith 28 Feb 06 From: Linda Kelly i feel quite shocked at this- she was lovely I met her once at a Socialist Workers Party do in the 1980's we chatted in the toilets for 15 mins or so, very funny on and off stage. What a cruel disease. |

01 Mar 06 - 07:28 AM (#1682077) Subject: RE: Obit: Sad death of Linda Smith 28 Feb 06 From: Folkiedave She did her stand up spot at Martin Flannery's Retirement do (Martin was a left wing MP in the days when there were more of them). She was very funny. I loved her on the radio. As the Guardian Obit points out she spent some time in Sheffield and I remember her in Sheffield Popular Theatre too. RIP |

01 Mar 06 - 08:09 AM (#1682104) Subject: RE: Obit: Sad death of Linda Smith 28 Feb 06 From: Purple Foxx Also from The Guardian Obit (Written by Jeremy Hardy) "She didn't exactly rage against the dying of the light, but she gave it quite a look." Felt he caught her voice very well with that one. Linda was President of the British Humanist Association for 2 years prior to her death. In which capacity ,as in every other she will be a very hard act to follow. |

02 Mar 06 - 07:02 PM (#1683674) Subject: RE: Obit: Sad death of Linda Smith 28 Feb 06 From: autolycus A very sad loss. Still, she made a great contribution (I have tapes of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue with her on, being wonderful, of course). So, thankfully we have a legacy and memories. But 48 !!! That's harsh. 02 Mar 06 - 08:05 PM (#1683726) Subject: RE: Obit: Sad death of Linda Smith 28 Feb 06 From: McGrath of Harlow From this piece in today's Guardian: "She had done many benefits for the striking miners back in the mid-80s, and loved the story about the pickets who had built a snowman, only to see a police Land Rover deliberately smash into it. "Next day they built another snowman, and exactly the same thing happened. What the police didn't know was they had built this one round a cast- iron bollard." I think that image sums her up pretty well - cheerful but formidable. |

03 Mar 06 - 07:24 PM (#1684616) Subject: RE: Obit: Sad death of Linda Smith 28 Feb 06 From: Folkiedave There was a song made up about the incident: "The miners built a snowman and Nesbitt knocked it down. (rpt x3) And he won't do that again". To the tune of "Glory Gory Hallelujah". Tonight's "Have I Got News for You?" featured her and the above story plus loads of other good ones are in there. Listen again of course on BBC Radio 4 - repeated tomorrow Saturday lunchtime on BBc radio 4 at 12.30 pm. Good homage. |
