BS: Bush warned about Katrina devastation

Subject: BS: Bush warned about Katrina devastation
From: Azizi

"Federal officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief of possible devastation just before Hurricane Katrina struck. Six days of video footage from briefings and transcripts were obtained by The Associated Press.

The warnings were that the storm could breach levees, risk lives in the New Orleans Superdome and overwhelm rescuers. A-P reports Bush didn't ask any questions during the final government-wide briefing the day before Katrina struck on August 29th....

The video shows both FEMA Director Mike "Heckuva job" Brownie saying he had a gut feeling this would be the "big one" and storm meteorologist Max Mayfield standing in front of a radar image indicating a breach in the levees, specifically from Lake Pontchartrain driven by high winds, was a concern:

"I don't think any model can tell you with any confidence right now whether the levees will be topped or not but that is obviously a very, very grave concern," Mayfield told the briefing...

Bush says in the video that he's "fully prepared."

Here's the video of that briefing:

Let's go to the tape: Bush warned on Katrina on tape by geordie
Wed Mar 01, 2006

****

This tape certainly appears to contradict the post-Katrina statements that Bush made that no one could have predicted that the New Orleans levees could fail.

It sure seems to me that Bush has gotten caught in a lie.

What do you think?

That's the point I have been making for over 3 months now, MiziAzizi... None of this is new information because Broqwn testified before a House Comittee in October and said purdy much the same stuff except no one seemed to be listening...

Now, now matter how hard the Bushites have tried to keep the truth from surfacing, it is surfacing anyway...

You won't get any Bushites here to argue with because after well over 300 posts in my "KatrinaGate" thread, I've worn them all down...

This is all "water over the dam", if you'll excuse the pun. What the hell is his excuse for conditions in New Orleans NOW? People living in tents without running water or electricity while mobile homes rot away in other states. What possible excuse could there be for no electricity or running water in habitable homes in the POORER sections of town.
Yes - I understand that the initial thrust had to be to get businesses up and running in order to create jobs and provide goods and services.
But SIX MONTHS have gone by, New Orleans (and Mississippi, etc) are facing another hurricane season. This is the United States of America, not some third world country. And many if not most of those living in squalor were tax paying citizens before the disaster. It is inexcusable.
Add to that the very real fear - what the hell will happen in the event of a major terrorist attack? We are obviously not prepared.

No, you're not. And the reason is...it's all about the money. A country that is as terrified of socialism as the USA is will never be prepared to deal with a major disaster.

Not money, per se, but about the political ties that seek to suck it up and direct it to personal inurement, directly or indirectly. Bush is a complete ass. Being briefed on a high-probability catastrophe, he sat with a stunod look and asked not a single question. Numb-nuts capitalist tool.

That's a country that's terrified of what the right wingnuts CALL socialism.

They wouldn't recognize real socialism if it bit 'em in on the ass.

Ah... maybe this is neither the time nor place, but, does anyone know if any questions were ever asked at any enquiries about why the Canadian Navy (who got there days before the US military and others) were turned away? I still cannot believe, after unloading thousands and thousands of MRE's, among other supplies, they were told to load them back onboard because of Mad Cow Disease (which is, of course, bullshit... pun certainly intended.)

Or why the rescue crew(of about 50 SAR folks) from Vancouver got there before so many rescue groups from FEMA? They chartered a plane and went.

They should have briefed Rove first then Rove could talk to George in terms he could understand.

There was no conspiracy to eradicate the disadvantaged in NO.
There was just a president who could not understand because he could care less. His only job is to recite sound bites. Even if he could be taught to care, its still not his job.

It seems to me...
W was told early in his first term before 9-11 who was the boss. When he started to throw a tantrum he was smartly thrashed. The pretzel was a cover story.
Do you know anyone who has lost consciousness on a pretzel and fell in such a way that a coffee table then left a mark on his cheek in the identical manner that a right hand cross would ?
Popcorn maybe but never a pretzel.

Chertoff looks like a man who will spill the beans after his term is done. If he lives that long. http://www.angelfire.com/md2/customviolins/bushlaughsap.jpg

I'll refrain from commenting on the pretzel incident, but it's ridiculous for anyone to say that nobody could have predicted the levees would fail. Plenty of people had predicted that, for years prior to the storm, as well as in the days immediately before the storm made landfall in the US. I heard the concern expressed on the news numerous times as the storm approached the US (my daughter lives in New Orleans, so I was paying attention). I certainly didn't need any private briefings by high-level officials to understand that this was a real concern.

It's similar to statements that were made after 9-11 that nobody could have imagined someone would intentionally fly planes into buildings. Plenty of people had imagined it -- Tom Clancy even wrote a best-seller a few years prior to the event that opened with someone flying a plane into the US Capitol while the President was addressing a joint session of Congress.

People say the dumbest things; President Bush says a lot of them. It's amazing that he isn't called to account for them more often.

I told my daughter 15 years ago that one day New Orleans would be wiped out in a major hurricane. Sometimes I hate being right.

If only one hundreth of the greedy & immoral acts done by dubblepew & his cronies come to light, half of the USA will be filled with shock & awe. The other half will have already surmised the facts.

The entire thing is such a waste. The knowing before hand, the lack of preparation, the lack of IMMEDIATE help, the turning away of additional help, the continuing lack of help, the timeliness of it all....it's a bad situation over and over and over again. Funny how aid made it halfway around the world to folks in other natural disasters but our own people were left dying out on the highways.

It makes me think twice about how to take care of my own family and how we are prepared.

There are lots of news reports out there but the media (television, anyway) is owned by a handful of folks....we see what they want us to see...nothing more. Pretty scary, actually.

Peter Jennings on NBC Nightly News has an nighty portion called "The long road back" about the victims of Katrina and the work 'not' being done in the areas severly hit by the Hurricane.
A few weeks ago after he had shown that particular evenings report he said he wanted to reply to the large number of emails that he had been receiving regarding these nightly reports dealing with Katrina. The emails had basically been telling him, enough already, it was time to move on and that surely there were other stories in need of covering.
Jennings replied that he will continue to broadcast the nightly section " The long road back" until there is no longer a need to draw attention to the plight of the Gulf coast region and the Victims of Huriicane Katrina.
It struck me as repugnant that people thought that they had heard enough about Katrina and her Victims but unfortunately it didn't surprise me that there are people out there who think like this anymore.
It would seem that not only Bush and his administration don't care, some Americans don't either.
As for Bush knowing...well hey he is the President why wouldn't he know...the thing is did he care enough to do anything about it!
Actions speak louder than words.
The lives and reputations of fall guys and gals litter the 5 years that this crew has been in charge. Brown is only another FG...if they haven't taken responsibilty for anything else they have done before Katrina struck, and people would have to be completely blind not to admit there has been some serious maladministration in the last 5 years, why would anyone be surprised at the lack of response/responsibilty in the instance.
If Katrina had hit Florida......well that long road back would most likely have been a short path imo

It couldn't be Peter Jennings. Peter Jennings died of lung cancer a short while ago. He was on ABC anyway, not NBC. Was it Tom Brokaw?

Heck, weelittledrummer, Bush hasn't won the last two elections so why would we expect anything different now??? His boys woyuld just rig it up a little differently if it were held today but, rest assured, it *would* get rigged...

But a serious question here... Why not bring Michael Brown under the executive priviledge umbrella and just for once try to fight out one of these scandals without a boogieman...

Soes Karl Rove think the American people are complete idiots, or what??? Now the boogieman is doing some serious boogying of his own...

The Bush response to disaster & devastation, deny, deny, deny. Upon hearing news of 9/11 he sat silent in a schoolroom class for over 7 minutes doing what he does best, looking dumb. We (the people) have such a low expection of this administration's performance at this point it's surprising when the man can walk & chew gum at the same time & if caught doing it his reply would be deny & say what gum.
It's been gloomy for a long time. When he's caught & exposed & there's wide spread media it's like, please, where have you folks been, you're a day late & a dollar short, already, AGAIN. Whose fingers on the pulse of the nation. It's an insult to the public.

Didn't Bush say he was taking resposibility for the catastrophe?

In the circs., that would mean resigning, wouldn't it?

The whole thing remionds me of perceptive play by the Swiss Max Frisch, The Fireraisers. Briefly, in a city where there are many arson acts, Mr.Biedermeier (German for 'bourgeois') takes a lodger on, who is soon bringing in a friend, then drums of petrol (his room is in the attic), and finally asks Biedermeier for matches. Mr.B. agrees to every request because he doesn't (or refuses) to see the possible connection between the lodger and the earlier arson attacks.

Let the arsons stand for Katrina, the previous attacks for the hurricane and 'fragile levees' warnings, and Mr.B. for those who ignored/didn't believe the warnings.

just spin some more lies about his 'war on terror' featuring Iran or some other sovereign state

invent further WMD stories about states with oil/strategic value

then invade Iran or some other sovereign state.

The masses will hop, skip & jump forward to forfeit their lives on a lie * as the last several times.

But bottom line here is that it didn't matter if it was hurricane or a terrorist attack what showed, quite vividly, is that when Bush went around the country pumping out his chest and boasting how it was his job to "protect the American people" it was just talk.... Nuthin but talk, talk, talk...

The man can't walk the walk 'cause he has never been taught... He had be ****given**** everything in life... From Get-Outta-Nam cards to a baseball team to an oil comapny and he has messed up all of them thru AWOL or lousy business management...

So why would anyone be surprised that given a second opportunity to shine (Katrina) that all that came from outta 9/11 and all his boasting was that he hadn't learned one danged thing from 9/11 other than politcal stuff afainst the democarts... But not one single other thing....

This guy is nuthin' but an impostor... Nothin' more...
