BS: sexology courses

Hi all,

I want to be a sexologist. I think I would be great at it. ( Before I get the cheeky answers: I realise that it doesn't involve having a helluva lot of sex, I mean, have you ever seen the sexologists on tv ? I doubt they are personally all that active ! )

I have been looking about the internet and it doesn't seem to be all that common a course. Can't imagine why ! I am from the UK, but live in another part of Europe. Initially, I was thinking of going back to the UK to do it, but as I haven't seen a lot of courses, I was wondering if any mudcatters have a great knowledge of sexology courses in the USA or Canada, say. Or just any wee bits of info!

There's a story told about a starving, bankrupt businessman in New York, who was sitting in gloom in his office as the last piece of furniture was carted out, leaving him nothing but a phone on an old apple crate. The phone rang, and when he picked it up, a snooty female voice asked, "Is this the Rothschild residence??".

"Oy!!", the man replied. "Lady, have you got the wrong number!!"

It usually involves a degree in psychology and/or some medical studies with special emphasis. Some schools have curriculums suited to it. I suspect your internet searches were not phrased right.

You need to refine your 'goal' a bit more, as 'sexologist' implies a narrow field which may be hard to hang out a shingle in.

Try the Kinsey Institute at the University of Indiana at Bloomington.

Back in the early days of some of the cable networks one of the channels ran a program with a blond woman out of California. Laurel Canyon comes to mind. Interesting, but she always seemed so naive and occasionally was rather shocked by things people told her. That was what was shocking about the program!

Then, of course, there is Dr. Ruth. Mary Steichen Calderone did a lot of good work in that field, but she died several years ago.

Bill D makwa a good point. It's probably easier to hang a shingle on it if its hard. (ducking and running for cover)

Does Sue Johansen teach anywhere? I know she has a radio show - somewhere in Ontario, I think. She's been on all the talk shows... Leno, Letterman, etc. I googled her name but couldn't find any university affiliations... well, I didn't spend a lot of time at it.

Try asking Betty Dodson. If anyone could give good advice about this, she would.

My school was so strapped for cash that we had to use the same car for drivers ed and sex education. Fond memories...

column was recently dropped by one newspaper that printied it for 17 years. Perhaps there is an opening...for another advisor?
