3/5/1790:

death of the heroine

Flora MacDonald
(born c.1722)

She had, with great personal danger, helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape over the sea to Skye in 1746. (She first gave the full story to Boswell & Johnson when they kipped at her place on their Tour of the Outer Hebrides)

There is Flora, my honey, sae neat and sae bonnie,
And ane that is tall, and handsome withall.
Put the ane for my Queen and the ither for my King
And they're dearly welcome tae Skye again.

"Twa Bonnie Maidens" [thanx Bob Waltz] on Marais & Mirands,
                A European Folk Song Festival

ALSO:
On 3/5/1880 in the first major public transportation link from the North to the South, the first passenger train left Cincinnati for Chattanooga, Tennessee. The train was immediately nicknamed the Chattanooga Choo-Choo. You can see it your self in Chattanooga. I think there's some song about it, too.

Another hauntingly beautiful song (from Brian McNeill) about the same woman:

Strong women rule us all with their tears
