Just seems like this lately, bitterness and bad manners seem to have taken hold of this site.

I worry for future of mudcat.

9½ years now, and I have seen 6-7 or more swings as different mixes of folk enter the fray. It's like global warming...you can't predict a 'trend' based on a small sample.

Besides, it may be the "big city syndrome" the larger the population, the more of ANY type behavior you will find, and the nasty ones have a way of making noise and trouble out of proportion to their numbers.

This thread is not just a bitter pill to swallow, it's also a can of worms, a tough nut to crack, a leap in the dark, as good as gold, fair and square, and food for thought, but hold your horses, in a nutshell its all Greek to me. Its a whole new ball game.

Actually, it seems in the last week to have improved dramatically. We still disagree, sometimes heatedly, but in general the stupid vulgar personal attacks appear to have moderated. Even our favorite erstwhile denizen of the sewer seems to have emerged from the Stygian darkness-- (just had to seize the opportunity to use "Stygian darkness"--such occasions don't appear very often)-- and decided (whether under duress or not) that there might just possibly be a purpose to communication after all.

Well, the proof of the pudding....

When the vulgar personal attacks do still appear, at least the perpetrators may apologize, which has rarely happened til now.

But, don't worry, the shipment of cynicism arrived intact.

So, as has already been suggested, let's all have a pint of bitter or whatever you'd like.

bitterness often develops when a product is overdone - reduced exposure and a lesser amount of heat are both indicated

To avoid it, either spit or swallow very quickly.

(sure is a lot MORE good beer in England & Scotland, though.....I think I need to conduct some more tests)

I think maybe quite a few of us are middle aged - If I'm in the middle of life - I'll live til I'm a hundred and fourteen.

Of course we're bitter, life didn't work out as well as it should have done.

Count yourself lucky that we're as nice as we are......

"...life didn't work out as well as it should have done..."

This is probably true in a lot of ways, and perhaps we are resentful for those, but there are aspects of life which turned out unimaginably better than we could have ever hoped to dream, and I think most of us are aware of them as well.

Partially and sometimes bitter maybe, but not all and only bitter surely?

You know, i have a life to lead too, i am at work, and have never bothered to join as a member, but like to look, read and post. But somehow my non-member status makes me inferior. There is a lot of that on here.

Guests are like ghosts, our presence is known, but one can't determine our existance, we can be annoying but not dangerous, and there are some who deny our existance.

09 Mar 06 - 11:25 AM (#1689263)
Subject: RE: BS: Has Mudcat Become Bitter?
From: John MacKenzie

Ther is no anti guest movement on Mudcat per se. There is a general and understandable dislike of abusive Guests, especially when it is a gutless Mudcat member who has logged out in order to be nasty.
Some of these Guests of convenience have such a recognisable style that it is pretty obvious who they are, but without access to Joe Offers managerial buttons we can't prove this, which is exactly what they are hiding behind.
So welcome Guest, your informative clever and amusing posts are welcome while your vituperation is wasted on those with any sense.
As an afterthought a set of initials or something would be nice, I know it proves nothing, but it's nice anyway.
Cheers

Bitter? Emphatically no!

Anti guest? Ditto!

It is, however, somewhat difficult to establish whether you are having a twenty post discussion with one person, or suffering twenty sniping attacks from separate individuals.

That is the main advantage of membership. We still don't know who you are in the real world, but we DO know we are talking to YOU, and not a whole bunch of others.

It's always easier that way to become a recognisable and respected poster.

The point about members logging out to make anonymous attacks is a good on, as of course it presents a negative view of the way guests behave. It might be a good idea if some of those were outed as a deterrent.
