Ivor Cutler died on the 3rd of March.
He was an idiosyncratic Poet,Songwriter & performer who infuenced a great many who came after him.
We are poorer for his passing.

A great and surreal musician/poet.
I always used to enjoy the bits he did for John Peel years back.
Sorry to hear he is gone.
Quack!
Geoff.

Wonderful man, if you get the chance read 'Many Flies Have Feathers' by Ivor, uproariously funny stuff.
I also seem to remember hearing of him doing poetry readings while a young lady posed on a chaise longue behind him on the stage.
The world is indeed a much less idiosyncratic place without him, and much the worse for it.

He finally reached the bend where the blind men fall in! Extirpated without compunction. The world is a much weirder and better place for him.

Thanks for that link Giok, the Ludo album it refers to was produced by George Martin.
Apparently he (Martin)found it very difficult to tolerate Cutler's eccentricity.
This is the man who was producer for The Beatles & also The Goons.
I think that in itself speaks volumes about Ivor Cutler.
Great guy!

Saddly missed.

He always seemed to be on the radio in my youth (1950s) and was a true eccentric, though I personaly never found him very funny.

30 odd years ago when i was about 15 i found one of his early 60's LPs
discarded without a sleeve in the middle of a busy town centre road..???

says a lot for the strength of old vinyl..
it had been run over a few times before i rescued it out of curiosity
and took it home to play on the huge old family valve radiogram
[didn't want too risk ruining the stylus on my dads hi fi deck,
but i'm sure he still would have gone mental if he'd caught me
risking the needle for his precious old big band 78's]

anyway that roadkill vinyl crackled to life
and i was spell bound hearing ivor cutler playing & singing
through the dense miasma of clicks and scratches..

..sounded like a strange lifeform from another dimension
trying to communicate
with our reality..

must track down the CD one day..

I saw him a few times on the box, just didn't really get him. Impressed by his large following - wish I could do that trick.

Punkfolkrocker, I think some of Ivor's back catalogue was released on the Creation label some time in the late 90's.
Definitely one of the better side-effects of the brothers grim's desire to be The Bootleg Rutles.

Have only just found out - so sorry to hear.
Ivor was a true character, a distinctive and unique talent, and his quiet and unassuming surreal genius will be sorely missed.

Some Quotes.

"The Earth meets the sky over the hill.
I was told by a sparrow with a lump on his head"

"A man with a hand like a hammer, was hanging a portrait of his wife"

"Look! said Father....A Thistle!....Soon we were acquainted with all the thistles in Scotland!"

Not to forget, Fremsley.

Always a pleasure to work with, and a true Gent.

Gone but never forgotten.

Letter in today's Guardian reports that Ivor wrote his own Epitaph:
"Never knowingly understood."
Now that, is Class.

Might be interesting to watch.
