Alex G Bell received the telephone patent on 3/7/1876.

His first successful test ("Mr Watson, come here. I want you.") was a few days later on March 11th.
It was a Good Thing as the critters wouldn't otherwise have had a place to sit and sing:

All God's critters got a place in the choir
Some sing low, some sing higher,
Some sing out loud on the telephone wires,
And some just clap their hands, or paws, or anything they got now...

ALSO:
Morris Slater, railroad worker, railroad robber and killer was finally shot dead in a grocery store on 3/7/1897 at about age 40.
In his exploits and escapes, he became known as 'Railroad Bill.'

Railroad Bill lyin' on de grocery floor,
Got shot two times, and two times more—
No more lookin' fer Railroad Bill.
