Song Challenge - accelerator jammed.

There's just gotta be a song or two here.

A motorist was trapped in his car driving at almost 130mph for 60 miles after the accelerator jammed.

Kevin Nicolle, 25, was unable to stop the automatic BMW going at top speed after the malfunction on the A1.

Kevin Nicolle: 'I couldn't get the pedal off the floor'

His terrifying journey, which was followed by four police cars and a helicopter, ended when he smashed the car into a roundabout, flipping it on its roof.

Amazingly, the former lorry driver walked away from the accident uninjured.

Surely this will be "The Bubble Car Song"

While driving in my motor car, down South on the A1.
I pulled into the outside lane 'cos passing cars is fun
I then thought I had bett'r slow down, 'cos speed's against the law.
I took my foot right off the gas, the ped'l stayed on the floor.

Beep Beep, Beep Beep, My horn went Beep Beep Beep.....

More to come

"We are unaware of any issues of that nature with that particular model."

Does that mean they are aware of issues of that nature in other models??????

Didn't the poor sap know enough to turn the ignition off?

Guest:
If you had read the whole article as linked you would realise that the driver believed this would have disengaged the power steering.
A response by BMW in The Telegraph pointed out that turning the ignition only one notch would stop the engine, but allow the steering to continue, but at 130 mph I wouldn't fancy taking the risk if there was any other alternative.

That's what I wondered, too, Sins. That and what about his emergency brake? Of course at high speeds, it probably would have burnt out, too, or caused an even worse accident. Glad he survived!

Accelerator jammin baby,
Boy, have I had a hard time from you
You didn't wanna take me to that lay-by
You just kept carryin on thru

CHORUS
We were accelerator jammin baby,
We were just accelerator jammin baby
Accelerator jammin
I don't just cut those corners
I just come striaght on thru

Accelerator jammin baby,
I asked you to put your foot down
but I really didn't wanna go so fast
Applying a little brake just makes those good times last

REPEAT CHORUS

I've always made my livin' by drivin' a truck,
And when I drove that Beemer, I was so out of luck.
Down the old A1 at one thirty miles an hour,
My accelerator stuck whilst driving at full power.

Four cop cars were chasin' me, their sirens a blare,
And a helicopter up above disturbing the air.
I zoomed past the traffic at alarming speed,
They wanted me to stop but I could not pay heed.

For sixty miles I sped along the old A1,
I can tell you my friends, it was certainly no fun.
The Police maybe thought I was keeping aloof,
Until I hit a roundabout and ended on my roof.

I survived with no injuries, of which to speak,
I told the cops the story and felt so meek.
I really couldn't help it, so I was not in the wrong,
And now I am immortalised in a stupid song.

This was almost a routine occurence with one car I had for a while: 1958 Renault Dauphine. The throttle was connected via a cable that pulled the throttle to full on. In icy conditions, something would "freeze up" and the throttle stayed at full on. Pushing on a cable doesn't do much good, so that's where the throttle stayed until you could stop, and go back and pull on the other end of it in the engine compartment.

It was also the first vehicle I'd personally owned that locked the steering if you turned the ignition off and released the key. You could hold the key "half-off" and kill the engine, but it meant steering one-handed, and made it impossible to change gears. Downhill on a corkscrew backroad that's about half glaze-ice, in Maine in December, was the biggest thrill.

This may be the original...

Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep
While riding in my Cadillac
What to my surprise
A little Nash Rambler was following me
About one third my size
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn
Ill show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

I pushed my foot down to the floor
To give the guy the shake
But the little Nash Rambler stayed right behind
He still had on his brake
He musta thought his car had more guts
As he kept on tooting his horn
Ill show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

My car went into passing gear
And we took off with gust
Soon we were going ninety
Musta left him in the dust
When I peeked in the mirror of my car
I couldnt believe my eyes
The little Nash Rambler was right behind
Youd think that guy could fly
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

Now we were doing a hundred and ten
This certainly was a race
For a Rambler to pass a Caddy
Would be a big disgrace
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn
Ill show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

Now were going a hundred twenty
As fast as I can go
The Rambler pulled along side of me
As if we were going slow
The fella rolled down his window
And yelled for me to hear
Hey buddy how do I get this car outa second gear?

But I did have a similar situation. The carborator warped on a 75 Plymouth ( 360 cu in) when I was driving it ...

The REAL important thing is to shift to Neutral BEFORE shutting off the ignition.......

I've been having a busy few days and nearly missed this one. Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Along came the 318, the fastest car around,
Driven by Kevin Nicolle, to Southsea he was bound,
Speeding along the old A1, just south of Catterick town
No thought in his mind of trouble as he put that old foot down.

Now Kevin pulled out to overtake, his foot down on the floor,
Straightened up in the middle lane, and eased it up once more,
The pedal stayed right where it was, which just was not correct,
He turned quite pale and said 'Oh heck', or words to that effect!

Now Kevin had a mobile phone, one of the hands-free kind,
He quickly called the old AA, he said 'I'm in a bind,
I'm going south on the old A1, please can you send a van,
They said 'Where's that in relation to our base in Pakistan?'

He tried the brakes, they soon burnt out, his speed rose higher & higher,
He called the cops who said 'OK, now where's the flippin' fire'
He said 'My accelerator's stuck, I think I'm going to die'
They said 'We'll try to catch you, mate, but if we don't Goodbye!'

A roundabout, it loomed ahead, he couldn't make the bend,
He hit the kerb, the car o'erturned, he thought 'This is the end'
Suspended in his seat belt, he could only hang around,
Until Blue Watch cut the car to bits and he was safe and sound.

Now Kevin feels much older than he did a week ago,
Whether he wants to drive again he really doesn't know,
A BMW spokesman said ' The company must be fair,
But this is not a problem of which we are aware!'

Gather 'round you left lane crawlers
a story I will tell
About the day my footfeet jammed
and I drove for miles like hell
I was cruising down the old A1
as happy as can be
But then my Beemer went beserk
unexpectedly

And it's fly, Kevin, fly
Fly, Kevin, fly
No matter how fast I'm driving
It's fly Kevin fly.

Now four police cars chased me
along that frightful road
They had a chopper in the air
in case I would be slowed
But no matter what I tried
I could not slow down
As the miles added up
I passed countless towns

And it's fly, Kevin, fly
Fly, Kevin, fly
No matter how fast I'm driving
It's fly Kevin fly.

The curves were coming faster
like I had never seen
But a roundabout stopped me cold
It was a fearful scene
When I finally came to rest
everybody feared
That I had met my end
but then I reappeared

And it's fly, Kevin, fly
Fly, Kevin, fly
No matter how fast I'm driving
It's fly Kevin fly.

why didn't he jus turn off the key?
or shift into neutral?
was he in cahoots with the song writers?

Many years ago, when much younger, I was working with a guy who had a BMW. One morning, he drove into the car park, and smashed down a 5 foot high brick (fence) wall. He had turned off the ignition before stopping the car to save petrol - he had worked out if he did this every day, although saving only pennies, it would add up!

The motor stopped, the power steering and power brakes died, and he had no control.

BTW, the financial plan was now severely in the red ... :-0

BTW, the BMW was automatic as well, and the transmission tends to NOT act as a brake when the engine is running slow. but the wheel speeds are high - it justs tries to shift down without anywhere near as much braking effect as a manual transmission setup.

Remember many years ago when I was in the Building Industry in the UK one of our site agents was driving down the M6 towards Birmingham in a new Ford something or other. He changed gear and the gear stick came off in his hand.
Now that is really a reason to panic!

I was driving my Fiat 128 home, and the clutch cable snapped. It IS possible, as long as you don't have to stop, to change gears.

I was driving a car and I put my foot on the accelerator instead of the brake..luckily it was a Ford Fiesta, so I didn't do too much damage to the parked car.

Nigel Parsons,

Get real. If you are doing 135mph (why the hell do the British still use imperial for distance/speed?) who cares about losing power steering? A little 318i would be fairly untroublesome to control after turning off the ignition, even just to bring it to the side of the highway (I dare say staying in his lane would not have been a high priority). Not to mention that at that speed, turning the wheel without power steering would encounter minimal resistance...

One last thing, a good few pumps on the brakes at that speed would helplessly overpower a little engine like that. Either this guy is a total dumbass, or he is a fraud gasping for attention.

Some people's first reaction is to just panic, as you have amply demonstrated.
