LIttle Hawk,

I believe both your Churchill quotes were said to Nancy Astor (First Woman MP to take her seat in the Commons), but were less directly insulting.

NA: Winston, You're drunk!
WSC: Nancy, you're ugly, but in the morning I shall be sober.

(NOTE: the continued ugliness is implied not directly stated)

and

NA: Winsyon, If you were my husband, I'd poison your cocoa
WSC: Nancy, If you were my wife, I'd drink it.

A favourite quote of mine:

If you are of Earthly goods bereft,
And of all you had but two loaves are left,
Then sell one, and with the dole
Buy chrysanthemums to feed the soul.

"Just remember, your sole purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others" I think this is from Les Barker.
Brilliant - we all know one or two it fits. Sometimes a look in the mirror on a bad day :-)

I thought it was Piet Hein who wrote:-
"If of thy worldly goods thou art bereft
and of thy slender store, two loaves alone to thee are left
sell one, and with the dole
buy hyacinths to feed thy soul"

Even if he didn't write it, it's lovely and I often think of it in early Spring.

I think he wrote:-
"Here is a thought that might help you fight a bit longer
Things that don't actually kill you outright, make you stronger"

Even one fixed machine is an abomination. We don't allow them in Maine. We haven't had a real crook in congress since James G. Blaine who lost to Grover Cleveland when they ran for prisident.

Cleveland had fathered an "illigitimate child, and the republicans made this up, "Hey Ma, where's my Pa"?
And the democrats responded, "Gone to the White House, Ha ha ha"

They also came back with this, "James G. Blaine, continental liar from the state of Maine."

kendall,

I agree, but I also object to the contiuos assertions that Diebold has such total control, and that the Republicans are the only guilty party. In EVERY incvestigation, there have been irregularities found on the part of BOTH parties, yet the presumption here is that the Republicans are guilty and Democrats are innocent. As I point out, in MD, IF there were any irregularities due to Diebold, they were in favor of the Democrats, who ( incidently) won the state and it's electorial collage votes...

"We ordinarily rejoice when someone is born and mourn when they die. This is because we are not the person involved." Mark Twain

The Philip Larkin poem referred to above is worth quoting in its entirety, IMO:

"This be the Verse

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
Add add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself."

By Phillip Larkin -- quite the cheery fellow.

If the Democrats and the Republicans ran a drunken hog and a poisonous swamp viper for President, the same people would still go out and vote for them, because there would effectively BE no one else to vote for!

And that, basically, is how it's done. One party, falsely posing as two parties, puts forth 2 phony lines of rhetoric, trots out 2 controlled creatures it pretends are real "candidates", the public votes one of them in, and the farce goes on for another four years. Almost no one in the world is fooled, except a sizeable chunk of the American public...enough to keep the farce going.

That's why the ancient Athenians didn't have political parties. Or pre-chosen slates of candidates. They chose their leaders by lottery.

Every Athenian citizen was supposed to be up on current affairs, and it behooved them to be so, because if the lottery happened to pick them, at the end of their term, they were evaluated by a jury of 501 citizens (too large a jury to bribe, and an odd number to avoid ties) and judged on how well they did.

In short, they were held responsible.

Not a bad system.

Mary, why would you assume that it is necessary to have political parties before one can have a manageable (and limited) roster of official candidates nominated for an election?

It's an unfounded assumption you make there, based on habit, I would think. Because you're used to having political parties, you assume they are the only possible public mechanism capable of selecting candidates. They're not. Not by any means. Any number of alternative methods could be devised, some of them far less susceptible to corruption than the political party, which exists mainly to feather its own nest and perpetuate its grip on power.

Les, the people with the same sort of ideas, as you put it, would have plenty of opportunity to discuss those ideas effectively in a non-partisan Congress or Assembly and in public meetings, both before, during, and after an election involving no political parties. It's been done, it's being done (in thousands of city coucils, for example), and it can be done any time people get the idea to do it.

The political party is a totally arbitrary, completely unnecessary, and very troublesome factor in a democratic system. It needs a lot of money to be effective and win an election. To get a lot of money, it does favours for certain people. Thence stems much of the corruption.

I think this is an interesting quote from Little Hawk, above. Ideas can be generated and polished in such events then passed to others to legislate - but the legislaters need to be accountable and so we lead back to groups wiht some kind of long term organisation.

The current failure of the party sustem is that those assemblies or public meetings don't really happen and our senior elected members act as if they are unaccountable.

Re Ed T's Shaw quote 3 posts back. That is indeed how it appears in several online Shaw quotation sites. But I suspected some PC interference at some stage: did Shaw really write "Native American"? Somehow I didn't think so -- the usage was surely not current in his lifetime.

So, investigating further, I found in 'Google Answers'

http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=321024

-----
From "Experiencing the Soul: Before Birth, During Life, After Death,"
by Eliot Rosen and Ellen Burstyn (1997):

"A Native American Elder once described his own inner struggles in
this manner: 'Inside of me there are two dogs. One of the dogs is mean
and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all
the time.' When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and
replied, 'The one I feed the most."
-----

So the error, it appears, was misattribution of the quote to Shaw at some stage, when it actually derives from a work by Rosen & Burstyn written 47 years after Shaw's death. Just shows that you can't always trust the Internet -- one site perpetuates an error from another site.... to ∞

Your assumption is the accuracy of one site's version.

About as subjective as you can get.

GBS and many other quote rich sources have things attributed to them in error but whether that is important depends on whether the person or the quote is the subject of your interest.

I once told a heckler "all the worlds a stage and all you can do is wank in the orchestra pit." Once I become incredibly famous and have women throwing their knickers at me with their mobile numbers written on them in lipstick, it would do me proud to see that in the book of quotes.

Sadly, fantasy doesn't always deliver.

And anyway, the lipstick was smudged.

'The use of "Native American" or "native American" to refer to peoples indigenous to the Americas came into widespread, common use during the civil rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s.' Wikipedia.

The term would not conceivably have been used by Shaw, who died in 1950. Why some people have had errors in their sources pointed out to them choose to persist in their delusions, with the support of notorious trouble-making near-trolls who revel in shit-stirring, is a complete mystery to me.

But I suppose we all have our hobbies.

When I go to the theatre
I find it hard to fit
For my head is in the gallery
While my feet are in the pit

I'm confused. Do I get the eighth point for this or the edited version in another thread?

Either way, it gets me the bonus. I am at a Halloween party tonight and shall raise a glass or three to my running total.

(I am being typecast and Mrs Musket reckons I would make a good Uncle Fester. (She is going as Morticia.) My original plan was to pull my arse over my head and go as a red backed beetle.

Which brings me to the quote, from one of the kids in the Addams Family fillum. "I'm here as a psychopath. They look like everybody else.")

"I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier,
I brought him up to be my pride and joy.
Who dares to put a musket to his shoulder,
To kill some other mother's boy?"

MGM Lion.. That's the bit we ignore because we are getting comfy for the actual film.

Or Musket.

Take your pick(s)

'Never apologise, never explain': attributed, among many others, to Benjamin Jowett (1817-93), distinguished Master of Balliol.

"I never apologise" -- The pompous and posturing Sergius in Shaw's Arms & The Man.

...both of which quotes might just conceivably have some connection with the remote possibility of my having absent-mindedly put a couple of posts on the wrong thread...

Maybe

""I always believed that my work should be unfinished in the sense that I encourage people to add their creativity to it, either conceptually or physically. Back in the 1960s, I was calling for 'Unfinished Music,' number one, and number two, with my artwork - I was taking unfinished work into the gallery. And that's how I was looking at it.""

Re Yoko quote (2 posts up).
If only she had been true to her word Ed.
John Lennon would have read "Ye_" at the top of the ladder instead of "Yes" and the future could have been oh so different.
