Miss Deaf Texas struck by train, killed

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The reigning Miss Deaf Texas died after being struck by a train, officials said.

Tara Rose McAvoy, 18, was walking Monday near railroad tracks when she was struck by a Union Pacific train, authorities said.

A witness told Austin television station KTBC the train sounded its horn right up until the accident occurred.

McAvoy, who had been deaf since birth, won the state title in June and represented the state "with dignity and pride," state pageant director Laura Loeb-Hill told The Associated Press via e-mail Monday night.

McAvoy was to represent Texas at the Miss Deaf America pageant this summer, Loeb-Hill said.

McAvoy graduated last year from the Texas School for the Deaf, attended Austin Community College and then started at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., in January, but had returned to Texas, Loeb-Hill said.

Some things just aren't funny.   I enjoy some sick jokes, but this is a tragedy and not something to laugh at.

For all we know, this may not have been an accident.

But she didn't make sure Tara was looking at her when she said it....

"not something to laugh at"
I'll laugh if I want to!

The exact same thing happened here in Moncton just a month or so ago. Young woman. Ya gotta wonder if it was an accident. Waliking down the tracks and not looking back? Tragic.

Ron... some people laugh so as not to cry. You said yourself that some sick jokes amuse you.

Clinton always makes me laugh. I must be sick.

"Clinton always makes me laugh. I must be sick"

Who am I to judge your opinion?

Sure, there are times to laugh at tragedy. An 18 year old with a challenge whose life is cut short in such a fashion is not very amusing.

Just in case anyone has not realized it, this is a true story - not a joke.

Know what Ron... if you fell off your high horse and broke your neck in the process, I'd probably laugh a lot at that too!

Someone DEAF should know better than to walk down traintracks where a TRAIN might sneak up on them without them hearing it...

Sounds like Darwinism to me

I have to say that I like "off-the wall" or "absurdist" humor but, frankly, sick jokes have always bothered me. If, in fact the above story is true (and with the Onion--who knows) I find it a cruel and unfunny piece.

"Absurdist" of "off the wall" is, to me, something on the order of the Monty Python humor, Richard Pryor, etc;   Making fun and laughing at our own foibles and human traits as some self deprecating ethnic humor is clever. Much Jewish, Italian, Irish, etc; humor is based on that.
We have had jokes about multiple amputees---not funny.   Presidential assasinations--I still cringe when I hear the jokes about Lincoln.

That said, perhaps time enters into the latter thing---must be some humor in Julius Caeser's or in Nero's problems since they were so long ago.

"If, in fact the above story is true (and with the Onion--who knows) I find it a cruel and unfunny piece. "

It is a true story Bill. The original poster thought it was worthy of the Onion, that is why they titled this thread. You can check out the story online at CNN.com.

Know what really makes me laugh?

When stupid kids on skateboards, try stupid stunts and end up leaving teeth, snot and hair all over the sidewalk!

Or when ignorant fat white guys with mullets kill their own small children by letting them drive ATVs....

Then I know that the human race is really taking care of itself to the best of its ability....

and I giggle myself to sleep....

I read about this trqagic incident earlier on CNN.

Maybe some of these stories will put a lid on the pathetic humour.

It just comes down to posing. Creating an image to hide what is really going on. Some people take an arbitrary stance or try to find humor in someone elses tragedy to cover up their own fears or shortcomings.

We all whistle past the graveyard to hide our own fears, and some people choose to laugh at tragedy because thet realize that they make the same mistakes and it could have been them.   It is a shame they can't face their real problems.

I'm thinking Clinton's remarks are ignorant but have come to expect nothing less from him. I'm sure he'll have some pathetic attempt at being nasty to me too...whatever.

I imagine the girl did know the train was coming, you can feel them coming from far away.

I feel badly for her and for her family. It sounds as though she was making a rather nice life for herself.

It appears that it was just an accident, caused by her misjudgement- it says that it was the snowplow at the front of the train that hit her.

"Police say Tara McAvoy was walking about 2 to 3 feet from the tracks. She was on her way to her mother's business when she was hit and had just sent her mother a text message.

"McAvoy was hit by the snowplow that's attached to the front of the Union Pacific train. It sticks out a foot or two on either side."

Ebbie's description makes this occurrence even more tragic and leaves out any room for "sick" humor since the poor person was not even on the tracks. If anyone still sees humor in this perhaps a "shrink" session is called for---or some sensitivity training. Or potty training for the mouth.

Perhaps the Onion should stick to political humor--something they are really good at---or even silly accidents that harm no one---or crazy bank holdups where the perp does something stupid like showing his drivers license before gettting his cash (true story).

well, it does and it doesn't. It started, as I recall, with a piece in the Onion. Though, admittedly, I see that the waggish comment came from DANI.   I guess the headline mislead me a bit---but, I have to say that not the Onion or any other source (or party) should think that there is anything funny in this tragedy.

I cannot even begin to think how family and friends can cope with this tragedy---like so many others we read about.

Scroll up to the top. You will see the AP credit. This never appeared in the Onion. The person who started this thread titled it "Who Needs the Onion?!" - meaning that this true story appears to be the type that the Onion would present.

So the idea - who needs the Onion, indicating that this story is so funny that the Onion couldn't make this up.   That is what is so insulting about the tone of the post - that someone thinks this true story funny enough to be included in the Onion.

Subject: RE: BS: Who needs the Onion?!

Point well taken. The Onion has more sensitivity that I had surmised and headlines should be more accurate. Frankly, that is an internet problem---sorting truth from fiction. Good reportage suffers at the expense of instant communication

Sometimes sick stuff is funny. But how anyone could see that story as funny just beats me - not because it's tragic and all, but because there just isn't anything about it is remotely funny.

As to DANI---Did your mother ever teach you the difference between humor and sickness----she must have told you a thousand times. But, as the 11 PM news says about people like you---he was a quiet person and seemed so nice. That is when they lead the perp out.

I think this post was an error in judgement from Dani. Hopefully nobody would seriously consider this tragic story fodder for humor.

The Onion makes up their stories. This is too tragic to be considered funny.
