Doryman here....Looking for infomation on uilleann pipes.....where to by a new or used set of quality pipes...States, Ireland, Sweden or Canada....any input would be greatfully appreciated.
Currently reside in Massachusetts. Manufacturers, locations, pricing, lessons. Need input so I can get on with the leg work of finding some good quality ones at a reasonable price. Thanks.

You might want to google Amazing Grace Music. John Pedersen, the proprietor, has been making them for many years. His shop is just North of San Francisco in the town of San Anselmo.

I'm sure it's been discussed before. But it needs reiterating that:

(1) Don't buy a set without playing them. If you can't play yourself, find someone who can and get them to try them. don't even look at the mass produced Asian ones.

(2) Best be close to the maker if they are new. They'll almost certainly need adjustment that he knows how to do for his sets. He may even show you the tricks he's found (though unlikely).

(3) It's much easier if you have someone nearby to teach or at least mentor you.

(4) Learn to make reeds. Alan Moller does a good video tape.

(5) Don't be over- ambitious. Get a half set maximum to start with. Play slowly and deliberately, and don't expect to outdo Maddy Poloney in the first fortnight.

(42) Remember it's music, and therefore about enjoyment, not a competition, and the pipes aren't a posing prop either.

Sadly I've lent my pipes to my nephew, and given up on them for 2 years now. The gap between aspiration and achievement was just too wide. So I haven't made any reeds lately.

I've taken up mediaeval huemmelchen instead.

Just because something has been discussed here before there is no need to be dismissive and unhelpful to someone who is clearly a new member and needs information

Thanks to those of you who responded. I will take a look into the sites that I was directed to and also their information. I am searching for a close friend of mine and really hope to come up with some good info and input for him. A kind, deserving and considerate friend who has always wanted a set of pipes of his own. I, for information sake, am a chantey singer with a National Historic Site big boat project going on for the past 5 years. Launching her in a few years with pipes would be a wonderful thing. Thanks for sharing and again any more info or direction will be greatly appreciated.
The doryman.
