Words and music attributed to Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of this, but here's what I found. Apparently, the song was also recorded by Elvis Presley.

A Hundred Years From Now
(Lester Flatt)

Well a hundred years from now I won't be crying
A hundred years from now I won't be blue
And my heart will have forgotton she broke every vow
I won't care a hundred years from now

Oh, it seems like yesterday you told me
You couldn't live without my love somehow
Now that you're with another it breaks my heart
Somehow I won't care a hundred years from now

* Refrain
Now do you recall the night sweetheart you promised
Another's kiss you never would allow
That's all in the past dear it didn't seem to last
I won't care a hundred years from now

* Refrain

The Harry fox Agency Website, songfile.com, lists a number of songs with the title "A Hundred Years from Now." I found one recording with that title in my library - the Gram Parsons song recorded by the Byrds on Sweethearts of the Rodeo - the Gram Parsons song isn't it, and as far as I can tell, Harry Fox doesn't have a song with that title attributed to Flatt. Lester Flatt did record this song under the title I Won't Care (A Hundred Years from Now)

IT is one of those songs that's been covered by so many people, and the damned sites that post the lyrics don't give credit to the writers (hasn't it ever been thus). They just say who sang it and don't bother mentioning 'them what's wrote the song'.

It might be worthwhile checking that indeed L and S DID write it. I have to get for the night. BTW, it wasn't skill on my part; just got lucky with Mr Google.

Have a good evening, Ron and thank you for your kind words.

Dang. Ron and Joe: Just found another site that says, "Author not available".

http://www.bluegrasslyrics.com/flatt_index.cfm.htm

The site saying that makes my post above seem a bit hasty as to authorship.

Flatt and Scruggs certainly recorded "A Hundred Years From Now" and even used their names in the writers' credits, but I'm not so sure they were originally responsible for the song.

Clyde Moody recorded the number in 1947 and finding his version prompted me to search further. I have now discovered that the duo of Bob Atcher and Bonnie Blue Eyes recorded a song called "I Won't Care (A Hundred Years From Now)" in June 1940, releasing it on Conqueror 9595.

I believe this is the same number, but have not yet been able to find a recording. I'd also like to know what writing credits are indicated on the label.

For a bit more info on the origins of the number, see

There is also another song by Gram Parsons (Byrds) called "One Hundred Years from Now" and another similar song by Michael Martin Murphy ("Wildfire" fame).

There are several numbers called "A Hundred Years From Now." The Byrds, Travis Tritt, even Johnathan King, amongst others have had their own particular version. A stage version became popular in the 1930s, but perhaps the best known (without the "I Won't Care" addition) was by Carson Robinson in about 1943. The title is also popular with poets. However, the OP here was interested in the number associated with Flatt and Scruggs, which is quite a different song, and therein lies my own interest, too.

...as sung by Travis Tritt

"A Hundred Years From Now " ~   Marty Stuart

When you left
I nearly lost my mind
And I tried to drown my sorrows
Every night in warm red wine

My old heart broke to pieces
But I'll get by somehow
'Cause I won't care
Lord, a hundred years from now

From the top of this whole world
To the bottom of the glass
I've thrown away my future
By drowning out the past
When you walked out the door
Girl, you broke every vow
But I won't care
A hundred years from now

Tonight I'm hurtin'
In an old familiar way
Oh and I've got lots of reasons
Why I come here every day

Lord I'm tired, unloved and lonesome
That's how old Travis feels right now
But I won't care
A hundred years from now

From the top of this whole world
To the bottom of the glass
I've thrown away my future
By drowning out the past
When you walked out the door
Girl, you broke every vow
But I won't care
A hundred years from now
Lord, I won't care
A hundred years from now

The original Flatt and Scruggs recording listed Hein and Royle as the writers and gave the title as simply "A Hundred Years From Now." Strange on both counts. Firstly, Silvio Hein and Edwin Milton Royle wrote a number together with George V. Hobart, called "A Hundred Years From Now," which geatured in the 1905 musical, "Moonshine." However, the title normally associated with the Country number is "(I Won't Care) A Hundred Years From Now," so the label on the F&S Columbia release might just be record company laziness.

I'd love to see the sheet music for the musical number (sheets do exist) and also to hear the 1940 recording made by Bob Atcher and Bonnie Blue Eyes, or even just see a scan of their Conqueror 9595 release.

If anyone can help me in either of these wishes, please contact me at david at davidneale dot eu

Well, I think (I'm sureā€¦) that I have finally discovered the origins of "I Won't Care (A Hundred Years From Now)", supposedly written by Flatt and Scruggs, or even by Hein and Royle.

The real write was Red River Dave (Dave McEnery). Read more about it at http://davidneale.eu/elvis/ahyfn/index.html

Thanks for that. A mis-type. The name is correctly shown at the site. If anyone can help complete the info there with scans of labels, please contact me: david at davidneale dot eu
