BS: anyone seen my vagina thread ?

18 Mar 06 - 09:52 PM (#1697338)
Subject: BS: anyone seen my vagina thread ?
From: GUEST,mystified and all innocent

I could have sworn I left a thread here
titled "another use for vagina..." only 20 minutes ago.

make a cup of coffee, come back and its gone ?

.. the black hole of censorship works in mysterious and arbitrary ways
considering 80% of BS threads are just as complete shite
as my silly little thread..

which was intended as a riposte to all the lame space-wasting
cut 'n' paste & pun threads bloating and polluting
the bandwidth here.
It went here. JC

Larry David's TV wife was nervous before going on stage to perform in The Vagina Monologues.

To reassure her he told her that she was only going out to talk about it and did not have to go on stage and show hers to the audience.........

Peace, the question is, why do you feel you can override the editing of those who make the decisions? Joe Offer can decide to uncensor if he agrees, but re-posting without checking is not the way it's supposed to work.

It seems to be close to impossible to keep the issues straight once personal opinions kick in.

Yes, we all DO differ on taste, level of boredom, tolerance for silliness, respect for 'rules' and basic 'netiquette'. We will NOT find one set of rules that everyone is happy with, but we DO have one set of rules that are applicable.

This in Max's place, we post and the clones work, at his pleasure, under Joe Offer's direction. Editing/'censoring' is sometimes applied, and in borderline cases it will always be tricky to know what, how...or IF to delete or edit a post.

From what I have read for the 6-7 years this debate has raged, most members (I know...not Shambles) feel that there should be some limits to freedom of speech and lines that should not be crossed. Max made it clear when he gave Joe the job that 'some' control was required. I don't recall that he said anything about voting on every case, nor that when someone disagrees with Joe's rulings, that they may just stubbornly try to do whatever they want anyway.

There is an order to it all, if we pay attention to it. I have seen several final decisions *I* do not agree with, but they WERE Joe's or Max's decisions!

I note that Joe is leaving 'vagina thread' and 'tampax' jokes alone right now, though those seem to me to be pretty close to 'offensive enough to edit'...fine, it is not MY place to make that final decision! I have seen stuff before it was deleted in the past, and I also did not take it on myself to repost it from some sense of righteous indignation AT the editing. Many edited & deleted posts HAVE been restored after debate and a ruling...and that, in my not-so-humble opinion, is how it oughta work...and 5 MORE years of Shambles campaiging for NO editing is not going to change my mind.

YMMV

My point above was that the remark I made about tampax was no more offensive than the thread title. I don't think vagina is at all offensive. It's the term fer gawd's sake.

Subject: RE: BS: anyone seen my vagina thread ?
From: Bill D

Peace...did you post the 'tampax' reply originally? or just restore it?

I, personally, think that the **context** OF the not-so-cute reply DID make it 'more offensive' than either 'vagina' or 'tampax' as a word...see how we can differ?

It is not just a word that is in question, but how it appears. I posted a few years ago, a joke that used 'fuck' in its punch line....and the very use OF the word was the point....but I do not think fuck is therefore appropriate in each, every, and any case that someone might want to toss it in. Not on THIS site, anyway....(I've seen a couple where it is the standard)

How do we decide? As noted...thru the rules....I can't prevent people posting in ways that are not to my taste, and I can't do much about it if the executive decision is to allow it.....but I can offer my view...and I have just done that.

'seriously'? ..don't know how to answer that...I see the thread AS a reply, by 'guest mystified'(you?) to a missing thread I never did see, but then it went off in strange directions and when I read:
""anyone seen my vagina thread ?"

1) Lost your tampax did ya?"

...that just seemed to me to be a gratuitiously tasteless joke which, I gather, was deleted and then replaced. My posts then were directed to the rules, rather than debating whether it was tasteless...

Now, since the re-posting has been left alone, I take that as a management decision, even though I, personally, might have prefered to have it remain gone.

personal opinions about words are one thing, going by the rules are another...

It ain't easy to 'get at' some issues.

That's it exactly. You might have preferred to have it remain gone, but it had no business being deleted. It was rude, but so what? How does this constitute a personal attack or spam? Under what criteria previously stated by Joe could the deletion be justified? It was a mistake. If it had been left alone, somebody might have commented on how disgusted they were because people do that a lot, but it wouldn't have generated an entire thread focused on bitching.

Peace, there are some folks around here who claim being able to count as a major achievement. It's important to them.

Bill, it wasn't a correction - he simply posted it again. If that had been deleted I might have posted it, because I was just a tad cheesed off. I have no idea why someone would have deleted it on purpose, I don't believe Joe would have thought it should have been deleted - not after he'd reopened this thread which HAD been closed - and if he had, it would have been a good opportunity for him to explain that feminine hygiene products were now illegal to mention on Mudcat. No tampons, no Kotex, no Midol or maxi-pads or panty shields. My God, where will it all end!? The menopause thread?

I believe you should do what you think is right. Sometimes those in power don't agree and you have to deal with the consequences. You have to figure out which fights are worth it and which aren't, because there's a cost for even the righteous ones. This isn't about free speech. Most of the people who rant about free speech here have probably never read the first amendment. We don't get to say whatever we want here. We don't get to make personal attacks, as in Personal and Attacks (which often means flame threads), or post spam. Tampons however, are completely legal.

So the question is, was the thread deleted because it was offensive or because it was a copycat thread? We'll probably never know.

When I spotted it, I thought - 'uh oh, I don't think they're gonna leave that one there!', so I wasn't surprised when it was deleted. Then the same post turned up in the Viagra thread and was left there, so that suggests to me that the thread was deleted because it was a copycat - or maybe as some have said, the clones changed their minds. Who knows?

One thing's for sure, it got a lot more exposure (;-)) from being deleted than if it had just been left alone. Yes, it was a bit 'off', but it wasn't a derogatory term and not half as bad as some things I've seen.

Talk about a storm in a teacup!!

Yes, Tampons are generally considered to be completely legal on Mudcat.
In my janitorial days, I had other opinions about them which I will decline to discuss here....

As for the thread, I moved the one message in the "vagina" thread to the "viagra" thread from which it spawned - because it was a copycat, and because I figured I was going to get all kinds of complaints about the thread title from Mudcatters named Prudence and Chastity and Fortitudina. That effectively deleted the "Vagina" thread since there were no messages in it. When we get a surfeit of copycat threads, I sometimes consolidate a few of them by moving messages - I try to avoid deletions. As is evidenced by the popularity of this thread, my efforts at consolidation in this case, resulted in multiplication.

If Prudence and Co do not like our forum - why are they (like so many others who are thought by our censors and their supporters to be malcontents) invited to leave and find somwhere to their liking?

And as the complaints of Prudence and Co do not seem to be viewed with much sympathy by our censor - is it really sensible to take anticipatory censorship action BEFORE Prudence and Co even have a chance to complain about what other posters may choose to post?

Or are the imaginary complaints Prudence and Co just being used as yet another excuse to censor what is not to the censor's personal taste and to shape our forum by this?

Good point, Kat. I don't want to start another battle about Guest posting, but if a registered Mudcatter starts too many copycat threads, he risks building himself a reputation as an asshole. That tends to encourage him not to act like an asshole.

Practical Phil, who started the "Vagina" thread, had never posted under that name before - or since. He/She is completely anonymous, and has removed him/herself from the burden of being treated like an asshole for having acted like one.

So, Phil, I guess that's the price you pay for anonymity.

So, Phil, I guess that's the price you pay for anonymity.
-Joe Offer-

What price do our unknown number of voluteer fellow posters - with their ability to impose their judgement upon the posts of other posters - pay for their anonymity?

Generally, I move the copycats to the thread they're copying...
Didn't work on the Vagina/Viagra thread, I guess.
-Joe Offer-

Joe, That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, 'cos copy cat threads are usually just a play on words and they usually go in a completely different direction from the original.

It seems to that lumping them together is mixing apples and oranges and would simply server to lose, or hide the content of, the copying thread.

Also, many times the copying thread is a lot better than the original.

and is it really acceptable or polite procedure
imposing all the copycat crap
on the person who started the origional thread being parodied,
whether they want it or not ?

Most of the copycat threads, IMO, are inane and a waste of bandwidth. Joe shows a lot more restraint than I would.

If there are four copycat threads going, I leave them alone. The "Vagina" copycat was the first copy of the "viagra" thread, but there were a lot of copycats active that day. So, heck, I put the vagina together with the viagra, and I thought they would be very happy together...
I guess I was wrong. So, what's the viagra going to do without the vagina?

"So, what's the viagra going to do without the vagina?"

Perhaps sing a rousing rendition of "Stand Tall" by Burton Cummings.

Never been this blue
Never knew the meaning of a heartache
But then again, I never lost at love before
Somewhere down the road
Maybe all those years will find some meaning
I just can't think about them now
Or live them out anymore

Stand tall, don't you fall
For God's sake don't go and do something foolish
All you're feeling right now is silly human pride
Oooooh, Stand tall, don't you fall
Don't you do something you might regret later
You're feelin' it like everyone, it's silly human pride

Never lasted so long, no,
Through so much or through so many
I just can't believe I could throw it all away
Sometimes late at night
When there's nothing here except my old piano
I'd almost give my hands to make you see my way

Stand tall, don't you fall
For God's sake don't go and do something foolish
All you're feeling right now is silly human pride
You've got me down on my knees for ya mama
Stand tall, don't you fall
Don't you do something you might regret later
You're feelin' it like everyone
It's silly human pride

Where is it written that censorship should or will imposed by some posters upon their fellow on matters only of personal taste and our forum be shaped by this?

What is the point of encouraging (by example) the public posting only of any personal judgements by anyone upon other posters or the worth of their contributions?
