March 28 (Bloomberg) -- Former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, who oversaw the U.S. military buildup under President Ronald Reagan that helped hasten the Soviet Union's collapse, has died. He was 88.

Weinberger was chairman of New York-based Forbes magazine at the time of his death. He died early today at the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine, after contracting pneumonia, Forbes spokeswoman Monie Begley said in an interview.

Taking over at the Pentagon after Jimmy Carter's presidency, Weinberger sought to reverse what Republicans considered a decline in U.S. military capabilities relative to Soviet forces. Weinberger helped develop a strategic deterrent announced by Reagan in late 1981. The plan included production of 100 MX intercontinental missiles and 100 B-1B bombers as well as the development of a stealth aircraft and larger and more accurate submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

Lyn Nofziger, the irascible and outspoken aide who served Ronald Reagan most prominently as communications director during his two terms as California governor, died Monday. He was 81. Mr. Nofziger died at his home in Falls Church, Va., family members said. For the past year, he had been battling kidney cancer that spread throughout his body. Until his health took a turn for the worse late last year, Mr. Nofziger was working as a political consultant and contributing to his blog Lynnofziger.com.

Mr. Nofziger, who graduated from San Jose State University's journalism program in 1950, left his post as Washington correspondent for Copley News Service to join the Reagan campaign for governor during the summer of 1965 -- and advised him through the rest of his political career.

I wonder how many people opened this thread and said, "Who gives a shit?"

Nofziger wasn't well known except in the time he served as acting press secretary for Reagan but I always found him humorous even though I disagreed with his political viewpoints. The guy would take on anyone and with a goodly amount of humor in doing so. Classically irreverent you might say. Continue on the journey.........

Weenieburger on the other hand was an unmitigated and unrepentant asshole much like McNamara from an earlier time. McNamara differs only in being an unmitigated but now repentant asshole with maybe a shade more gray matter.

RIP Cappy, you gave the earth very little......

They were big names from a long time ago, so I thought I'd run them out and see who noticed. If it had been Oliver North and John Poindexter on the same day maybe that would have gotten more attention.
