Secretary of State WH Seward for the US and Baron Eduard de Stoeckl for Russia sign the Alaska purchase on 3/30/1867. The price—$7,200,000—amounted to about two cents per acre.

(In at least one state, the last Monday of March is recognized as Seward's Day.),
