When's Easter this year? Is it 16th or 23rd? If the former, I'll go for it, otherwise I'll be on the boat.

Splendid news Tim!

Its possible that in addition to musing, sining, drinking, & cavorting; there'll be opportunities for the more fit individuals to do some hiking [or rambling - depending on how much brew you had night before!], in the picturesque hills surrounding the campsite.

Mrs Happy & fiends are keen on wearing their legs out most weekends, trogging uphill & down dale in all weathers, & she's bought a map of the area yeasterday.

So if anyone feels the need of some self torture in this pursuit, feel free to join them.

While these extra muriel activities are taking place, myself & the all sining & musing party will be carousing in the pub or on campsite if weather's fine - if not fine in Mr Happy's session tent[loitering within tent?]

I'm hoping during this summer, me & fiends can get around to your local events, Leek, Ashover etc.

Also lots thanks to Mad O'Tim for coercing fellow folky fiends from around his end & elsewhere to come for compulsory hedonism & alcoholic self abuse.

Georgie & Jed, I checked out your webpage http://www.eranim.com/home.eranim

Your sesh looks fab!

I'll be co-ordinating with Tim to try to fix up a similar event before too long.

'Shame about the high levels of cigarette smoke'

'fraid your memory's a bit hazy on that John - not fag smoke - but almost opaque fumes from the two coal fires when the wind was blowing the wrong way.

Very very tempted. Only downside is that our band will likely be having a practise one day that weekend, and I'm not sure I can fit in 3 Stags *and* band *and* continuing married life! :-/

See how it goes anyway. If I do make it there, most likely it'll be up Thursday night and back Saturday morning.

Not THAT hazy...I wasn't touching the 8% stuff! The smoke from the open fires was, er, interesting on the Saturday lunchtime, but had died down by the evening. There were however an awful lot of smokers in the pub on the Saturday evening. It was a good do none-the-less.

Roll on July!

I look forward to the weekend, hopefully bringing some friends too.

Without wishing to preempt Mr Happy; there's loads of room providing the sheep have been cleared off the field in time. It's cheap to camp, and cooking is is made largely unnecessary by the excellence of the pub food and the convenience of breakfast at the cafe opposite. Speaking of conveniences; there is a very basic loo on the camping field, and of course the cafe and pub have loos. I've never had to book; turn up and pay at the house (I think it's the one next-but-one to the camping field.) It's great fun, and there is usually some really good music to boot. Hope to see you there. (I'm the one with the wierd looking guitar and even wierder mandolin!)

Hi Phillipa; yes, dogs are welcome both on the camping field and in the pub. Two provisos; it's lambing time, so leads are essential at Easter. Second; Geoff the landlord of the Three Stags has lots of dogs of his own, including a small pack of beer drinking whippets, who 'rule the roost' inside the pub. If your dog is sociable, it's not a problem, if not, beware drunken whippet bitches, who can be a little territorial at times. There is a bus that runs from Buxton to Baslow and goes past the pub, and there is a railway station at Buxton. Getting there could be easier though; if you go to Buxton someone is likely to be passing and may offer a lift (me, for example.)
Very best,
Tim

I'll bring my octave mandolin along, not that I'm much cop on it. Still, maybe I can loan it out and see what it sounds like when played properly. And probably my Regal resonator too - not sure I want to risk the Lowden in a packed 3 Stags session, and steel guitars are pretty much indestructable. I suspect my voicebox will be coming along for the ride too.

Philippa, being in the country, it's pretty badly served for public transport. The nearest station is Hope, and the busses aren't much good. If you do want to come, I'm sure we can sort out a pick-up - PM me if you want and we can sort out contact numbers and things. (You'll need to get yourself a login on Mudcat, but why wouldn't you want one anyway? ;-)

Graham.

Black Diamond,

I was labouring under a misapprehension - I thought you were TT - but obviously not if you're a Rum guzzler!

I do, therefore recommend that you at least indulge in a taster of the ales on offer - you say you don't care for beer - but this stuff's unbelievable!!

I must say , it looks very attractive ,if somewhat distant !! Now then---does anyone think that this venue could take another couple of hundred folkies, following the sudden cancellation of this year"s Miskin Festival ??? Alternative venue now urgently sought !! Is t' camp-site big enough to take t' hordes from t' South ??? And ( more importantly for some ) does the Three Stags' Heads sell proper-job cider ?? Just a thought !!

In the knowledge that, following the sad demise of Miskin, Mr Happy's little do may now be unindated with disenfranchised Missed Skinites; here's some issues to be considered:

*The 3 Stags Heads isn't a huge pub, in fact more than a dozen in the music space & its standing room only.

* a possible solution to this prob could be if anyone has a largish tent that could be brought along to use as an alternative sinaround/muso venue??

I'm starting to get worried about this; the pub is a very small 'two roomer', and fifteen or so people in the larger room is crowded. Good weather means sining in the camping field is ok, but bad weather could make things awkward. Perhaps start a list of who is definitely coming, to get an idea of numbers? I'll probably only be there on Saturday night, with my wife and youngest daughter.

Tim's suggestion above makes good sense, & with this info, we may be able to find out if there's alternative, more spacious venue accommodation available around the immediate area.

The list of those attending up to now is:

Mr & Mrs Happy 2

Anna & Phil 2

Barby & Jim 2

Marilyn 1

John J ?

Black Diamond 2

Mandotim 3

Strollin Johnny ?

Ossonflags + 10

Grab

Carol ?

Banjo Ray ?

Pilgrim ?

Making a provisional total of 28, as the people I've put a ? by means I don't know how many in their respective parties.

Could everyone coming please verify & also how many with them, please?

BD, it's not a "campsite" campsite, if you see what I mean. It's a field (from which the sheep have hopefully been removed) with a small loo shed in one corner. As you're stood facing the 3 Stags, the camping field is the field next to it on the right - there's a gate about 5-10 yards along from the Stags. It should be easy enough to find though, on account of there being a bunch of tents in there already!

The owners are pretty relaxed about it all. If you arrive late, just pay them in the morning.

Graham.

I'm still a little worried about this 'Loo shed'. What colour is it? Does it conform to local bylaws i.e. size and distance from dwellings, adjacency to underground water courses. As this is a mining area, do we know for certain that there is no subsidence in the immediate area? I would hate to think of the shed and several tents/caravans/vardas/teepees disappearing down a large hole and ending up being carried down a comunal water....No, it's too horrible to contemplate. Will there be a supply of gas masks?

04 Apr 07 - 01:31 PM (#2016318)
Subject: RE: Easter MudFolk Peak District:Come on!
From: GUEST,Ray

I've never noticed the shed and I pass there regularly so it can't be that big. Don't worry about subsidence its not that sort of mining - you're more likely to fall down a pothole or a mineshaft. In fact, a friend of mine from Litton (just over the hill) - we don't talk about him much 'cos he plays the banjo - found a new one last year; only 700+ feet deep though. You could always pitch your tent a couple of hundred yards up the road - nice flat field - used to be the site of a smallpox hospital.

Sorry I mentioned the smallpox - not many people know about this.

Weather is currently sunny but it was this morning and I had to scrape the ice of the car before I could drive off. The thing to remember is that the Peak District is the same latitude as Siberia so my advice, as a local, would be to come prepared for anything.

As for me, I'm staying at home (too many tourists at this time of year) and we're running the Sunday evening singaround at the Woodford festival anyway.

What a great weekend - beautiful weather, great walking up Peter's Stone and down Cressbrookdale, and some storming sessions in an exquisite pub with some fine musicians, Tom, Tim, Jim, Anna, John, Barbara, Graham, Stan, Marilyn, Carol, Lynn, Dennis etc (Mudcat names are up to you!). The food, beer and company really hit the spot. Sorry I had to leave early Sunday to go to SoreFingers and my fingers are sore before I get there. Thanks guys -it was wonderful.
Ray

Cheers all - good to see everyone and put faces to names (and real-names to Mudcat-names). And thanks to Mr Happy for setting the ball rolling.

Shame I had to leave on Saturday, but duty called. And turns out two of my brother-in-law's kids are musicians (one guitar/bass, one drums), so all was not lost. :-) Time to lead the little darlings into temptation - muhuhuhahaaa!

Anyway, roll on next year. Or maybe another sesh later this year? See how it goes. And if I get my arse moving and get out to some festivals this year, hopefully might meet up with some of you out there.

Graham.

I popped in on Saturday afternoon, but there was nobody in the pub apart from some bikers.

Never mid perhaps third time lucky with that place!

Absolutely incredible, astounding, astonishing experience!!

& A huge thanks to all who attended bringing their diverse & wonderful talents to share with us all.

Extra big thanks to Tom [terroristoops, terrier] & Tim for their most magnaminous assistance in our prob of transporting Anna & Phil.

Superb food in 3 Sags including:

Relope, relope, retiring hare, straight into my drooling mouth!

Apologies to Weelittle drummer, the Saturday afternoon sesh was on the camp field, as the weather was so scorchio!

On arriving home & unpacking, discovered we쳌fd stolen Stan Zervas쳌fs tea towel and his stripy chair.

Also gained another chair with green cloth material & aluminium legs, think might be Graham쳌fs [Grab].

If not, can the owner let me know or form an orderly queue outside Mr Happy쳌fs Music Therapy Marquee at Chester Folk Festival, which will be our next big do!

(In case you don't check your PMs) Yes it's mine. There's always something I've left behind - glad it was a relatively inexpensive item this time! I'll try for Chester - see how we're set.

WLD, there's your mistake then. Saturday afternoon we were all sat outside the tents in the field next door to enjoy the lovely weather, variously talking, eating, drinking and playing as the mood took us.

Graham.
