Bluegrass fiddle teacher in Gainesville

One of my beginning fiddle students is moving to Gainesville FL, and I told him that I'd try to help him find a fiddle teacher there. He wants to learn to play bluegrass. He is a smart and talented adult, and he practices. He has only been playing fiddle for a few months, but he is progressing quickly. He is also a nice guy, and I will miss him. I'd appreciate recommendations for a teacher for him and any information on the folk music scene in and around Gainesville.

Pauline - I stringly suggest you steer your student toward the North Florida Bluegrass Association - see here NFBA
There are a lot of great pickers there and they serve musicians at all levels. Barbara Smith is a great fiddle instructor and a member of the NFBA.

I was going to suggest the NFBA, but BTMP beat me to it.

Another good organization to check out would be The Florida State Fiddlers' Association. They hold the official state fiddle contest at the Florida Folk Festival on Memorial Day weekend. It's held in White Springs, just a short drive north of Gainesville and would definitely be worth your student's attending.

Refresh. Are there any good places to buy reasonably good fiddles for reasonable sums of money in that area?

I knew Jay Gimelli when he lived around here. He had the most incredible jam parties. I'm glad he's a "senior fiddle."
