Happy Birthday!

Capt. John "Mad Jack" Percival

was born Apr 5, 1779
(d.9/17/1862)

Come a sailor, come a soldier, come a captain, a king,
If you dare me to do it I'll do anything,
I'll take up the fight, I'll even the odds,
I'll do what is right or I'm not from Cape Cod,
I'm Jack the cantankerous cuss from Cape Cod.

"The Ballad of Mad Jack" by Steve Romanoff of Schooner Fare
(1981 LP, Closer to the Wind)

Romanoff says: "'The Ballad of Mad Jack' excerpts a fraction of the outrageous episodes in the long life of one of America's great heroes. The Cape Cod native terrorized the British navy in the War of 1812 and single-handedly saved U.S.S. Constitution ('Old Ironsides') from an ignominious scuttling." (in 1828?)                [thanx Barry Finn, May 1999]

ALSO:
Bearded fiddler, Dave Swarbrick was born 4/5/1947.

ALSO:
Singer & major collector (with wife, Anne) of Folk Songs and Ballads of the Eastern Seaboard, Jeff's dad, Frank Warner, was born in Selma, AL on 4/5/1903 (d.2/78)

Early warning notice: This series of the Happy File noncontinues beginning April 16.
