According to Merriam-Webster, it's a contraction of "God be with you."

Off the top of my head, to me it means something along the lines that "we may be parting for now but will be meeting again."

The way my grandpa used to say it was..."I'm glad you got to see me!"

In the spirit of the memorable line "No more wire hangers!" from the movie "Mommy Dearest", when I first saw this thread title I had the nerve to think "No more goodbye threads!"

Though those who aren't Christian may have some problems with all of its words, I think this song best exemplifies what "goodbye" means:

GOD BE WITH YOU TILL WE MEET AGAIN-Jeremiah E. Rankin, published 1880

God be with you till we meet again,
By His counsels guide, uphold you,
With His sheep securely fold you,
God be with you till we meet again.

Refrain:
Till we meet, till we meet,
Till we meet at Jesus' feet;
Till we meet, till we meet,
God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again,
'Neath His wings securely hide you,
Daily manna still provide you,
God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again,
When life's perils thick confound you,
Put His arms unfailing round you,
God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again,
Keep love's banner floating o'er you,
Smite death's threat'ning wave before you,
God be with you till we meet again.

Fortunately we don't have to not use words just because they've been co-opted or attributed to religions (of any sort). It's like calling facial tissues Kleenex. After a while the name stops being someones or some group's exclusive property.

I think "goodbye" means "it'll be good to see you again, bye and bye", most likely.

As Don Firth stated it's a contraction of "God Be with you".
Adios & Adieu mean substantively the same thing.

Goodbye Dolly I must **** you, though it breaks my **** to ****,
Something tells me I am needed at the front to **** the foe....

OK where does Tarra come from then? I can do toodle-pip (variant on toodle-oo).

Ciao, men.

traditionally in Ghana,we donot have the word "goodbye" in any of our local languages. rather we say to someone "don't keep long in coming".

Which is similar to to "au revoir", "arriverderci", "see ya", "Abyssinia" etc...

Of course, "shalom" means "salaam".

Someone gave me once what I still regard as one of the best phrases for taking leave of a friend, (they said it is a literal translation from Inuit)...."Sometime again"..... Perfect summing up in 2 words

or for the less perfect, From "Mapp and Lucia"
" eau Reservoir"
