Dick Greenhaus & Susan to Whitby 2006

Subject: Dick Greenhaus & Susan to Whitby 2006
From: Susan of DT

Hello friends

Dick and I are planning to go to Whitby again this August (Aug 19-25). Current thoughts are to arrive in the UK right before Whitby and stay thru Fylde at the beginning of September (Sept 1-3), perhaps flying in and out of Manchester. We have arranged the cottage in Whitby, but have not yet gotten the plane tickets. This schedule would give us the week between Whitby and Fylde to visit friends old and new. Who would like us to visit them? You can post, PM, or e-mail (susan@digitrad.org dick@digitrad.org dick@camsco.com).

How is Fylde pronounced? field? fill-dee? file-dee?

Sorry if this appears twice - I seem to have lost it once:-~

Monday 27th August is not only Bank Holiday but also the Saddleworth rushcart. Certainly worth a visit if you are travelling from Yorkshire towards Manchester that day:-) It is also a singers night at the White Lion in Swinton - Anyone fancy getting together that night?

Cheers

Thanx Snuffy. "Rushcart" did not mean anything to me, so I did not know what manner of celebration it was before following the link.

Hi peeps, I'll see you ar Whitby & i'm glad you're thinking of coming to Fylde Festival @ Fleetwood.
However I don't know if you have got accomodation sorted for Fleetwood? but it could be a bit difficult are very few guest houses in Fleetwood., & they tend to get booked year on year). Clevelys is a 10-15 min drive/taxi away and there is more accomodation there.
You could try these links

thornton-cleveleys.co.uk
smoothhound.co.uk (Smooth Hound is my favorite accomodation website).

The North Euston is the town largest hotel and a festival venue, but is a bit pricey.

Les - We are looking at borrowing camping gear for Fylde and have a couple of offers of gear.

What mudcatters go to Fylde?

We would like to visit with people between the two festivals (Aug 26-31) and no one has yet said they would like us to visit other than saying hello at Whitby. Since both Whitby and Fylde are more or less in the middle of the UK, we can go North or South in between.

Dick, is there any chance you'll be up near Edinburgh after the 28th?

I can't get down to England before then, anyway.

I would certainly love you to visit us, Susan:-)

Monday 27th August - Swinton Folk Club , The White Lion, Swinton, Manchester. Singers night. I will try to get other local catters there if I can. Accomodation either at our place or elsewhere local - Sunday and Monday OK? Presuming you are off to Fylde on Friday what are you planning the rest of the week between us and then? Is that what you are trying to sort out here? The Lakes or Yorkshire dales could be very nice with a tent - Depending on the weather of course! I can recommend some very good routes in the Dales. I am not as good on the Lakes but I am sure someone here is.

Cheers

Dave

Yeah......Come and have a sing in Swinton. Dave the G is a great host and his wife is a stunning cook. The White Lion has fizzy lagers and really old fashioned traditional beers (it also has the finest singers in the country doesn't it dave?).

You know, Spot, one look at Dave and I thought 'I bet his wife's a really good cook!'.

Looking forward to meeting up again in Whitby with Dick and Susan. I'm sure that there'll be an equally warm welcome over in Lancashire (in spite of what we're reputed to say about each other's county, I must confess it's my second favourite one of all - my brother's over there doing missionary an' all). I'm off to hide under a really large Yorkshire Pudding now!

We usually spend the time we are not at festivals visiting with mudcatters. Our route gets determined by who has said they want to see us, usually a mix of old and new friends. In the past we have either flown into London or Glasgow, which determined whether we were seeing Southern or Northern mudcatters. Since we are flying into Manchester this time, we can go either way or not too far in both directions. At this point we are open between Swinton and Fylde. Who would like us to stop by?

Dave - Isn't the 27th a Sunday? Is it Sunday or Monday? If Swinton is Monday, that gives gives us room for a visit that weekend, if it is not too far from Whitby and Manchester. Was there something in Guisborough right after Whitby? A mudcatter gathering that Saturday???

Thanx, all

We have:
1) our plane tickets
2) our reservations for cottage in Whitby, which we are sharing with             Charmion, Edmund, and Bill Sables
3) tickets with camping for Fylde

Dave the Gnome and Bill Sables will pick us up or deliver us to rental car places and airports and take care of us at beginning and end of the trip

Swinton/Manchester singers nite August 28.

Maybe up to Edinburgh

But we still have LOTS of open time. We usually move around and stay with mudcatters around the UK while we are there. It looks like nobody loves us this year. People have not been inviting us to come visit with them. Who would like us to come visit with them?

You're welcome to stay with us near Edinburgh. You had better not be allergic to cats, though.

It is getting closer. We leave a week from Thursday, flying to Manchester.
Friday Aug 18 - Arrive, get car, drive to Bill Sables
Sat Aug 19 - Sat Aug 26 at Whitby, see everyone, share cottage with       Charmion, CET, and Bill Sables.
Sat Aug 26 to Bill Sables
Sun Aug 27 & Mon Aug 28 at Dave the Gnome's, Swinton Folk Club
Tues Aug 29 - up to Edinburgh to Jack Campin
Thurs or Fri - Down to Fylde, camp out
Fri to Sun - at Fylde
Sun Sep 3 - to Dave the Gnome's
Mon Sep 4 - back to the US

So there is some possiblility of seeing other Northern mudcatters in between, if you are locate dbetween toher stops.

If you are free on the Wednesday you would be very welcome at The Thompsons Arms, Flaxton which is about 10 miles north of York nr Sheriff Hutton (probably 40 miles from Whitby). We have a mixed session/singaround sort of arrangement. It's not grand with airs and graces - just a bunch of people who get together to sing and play in the pub - but visitors are always welcome to come and join in.

Barbara - same rules, but less mess. One article said Manchester was commended for having the least disruption. The severest rules are for coming back, rather than Eastbound, so there is time for things to settle down before we return in September. They do permit books now, which seemed to me to be the silliest rule. All I have to worry about on the way over is my inhaler.

Hello all - Susan here

We are at Bill's now and will leave for Whitby in the next couple of hours. Security was the fastest we have seen it at Newark Airport - no onw ahead of us at the security gate. The usual wand treatment of Dick's metal knee. The added layer of security was searching hand luggage at the gate as we loaded the plane.

We are off to Whitby in the next hour or two. Hope to see a lot of you.

Whitby was wonderful. We saw lots of you.

We are doing laundry at Bill Sables' house. Not all of the clothes are on the line yet, but there are six mudcat shirts in a row, each a different color. There are another six or eight of them including 3 colors nor currently hanging there.

Off to Dave the Gnome's tomorrow. Hope to see some of you at the Swinton gathering and others at Fylde.
