Guitar cleaning stuff!

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question.

I was playing out in a pub the other night and a huge chunk of my fingernail came off, which made my finger bleed and there was a fair amount of blood on the guitar when I finished the set.
Very rock and roll I know...

Anyway, I have tried to clean it off using a damp cloth, which cleared away most of it, but it still isn't completely cleaned away (there's some 'smudging').

Is there anything anyone would recommend? At the moment I don't really have the time or money to buy specifc guitar cleaning products, so which household stuff would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

A

Depends on the finish of the guitar

You can usually use white spirit without too much risk. Sometimes you can get away with methylated spirits BUT TEST IT FIRST. I once used methylated spirits when I ought not to have done and it took a lot of dry soft buffing to get the damage under control. Soft bogrol is good as a clean cloth.

My rule is to always start with water. It's amazing what will dissolve in it and be wiped away easily without residue. Failing that, a light highly diluted mixture of water and detergent, followed immediately with a rinse of clean water. Frank Ford's advice is very good.

Fwiw, after some folks play my loaner guitar, a disinfectant is a good idea, and for that I use a Johnson product called Enbac sprayed on an already damp cloth before application, and rinsed afterwards.

Peace, Mooh.
