Jean Ritchie's Website down?

12 Apr 06 - 01:05 AM (#1715844)
Subject: Jean Ritchie's Website
From: Maid in Cyberspace

My web browsers are telling me that www.jeanritchie.com can't be found. The internet is working...is anyone else experiencing this problem? Did something happen to her?

I cannot get it to work, either. She posted to this forum last on 6 April. Sounded okay then. Let's hope it's just some problem with a server and she'll soon be back up.

I can't find it either. Could be a server problem.

The "whois" service says the domain jeanritchie.com is on Registrar hold, which means the domain name hasn't been renewed.

An admin problem, apparently needing the attention of somebody at folklife.net

I spoke with Jean a few minutes ago, and she is checking on what the problem is. I suspect we will hear from her soon.

All the best,

Son Jon, my Webmaster, has called our server several times this week and has been ignored...we think he(the server) just neglected to pay the domain bill! I would like to change servers but it seems almost impossible to do this. Anyone have any helpful hints? The present server has several of our sites so we don't wish to upset him too much!

Dear Jean, drop Max a PM and I will bet you money that he will be able to help you sort out the domain problem. I don't think it is as tough as you think, but I can be corrected.

All the best,

Mick

Hi, Jean,
I automatically have my domain names renewed each year so I don't have to keep track of renewal dates. Nice to "see" you here again. Max can surely help you get it sorted out.

Thanks, Big Mick and Alice... I'm glad we won't have to bother Max but I thank him also. Heard from our man this morning and he assures us everything will be back in shape soon- so I guess we'll give him another chance.    Jean

Here is the server we've been using for about three years. Costs us forty five dollars a year for domain name registration plus server space. They are super reliable and, as far as we can tell, neither of our sites has ever been down.

They don't have a phone number so we've always communicated by email and, in fact, we don't even know where they are. They have been exceptionally responsive, almost always answering our emails within an hour, both times we had problems. Neither of the problems had anything to do with them but they helped us fix them anyway.

We think that you can just register your domain name with them and check the box that says you already have it with some other server and they'll take care of the rest. They always email us about a month before our domain name or server space expire so it's simple.

Yep- we're finally back. Of course, the mail site is still not working and the shopping cart is still unavailable (I think- haven't checked today). If anyone wants to order, just copy down the info and send an oldfashioned letter and check, and it'll be shipped, as soon as George is back on his feet (he fell and broke a hip about 3 weeks ago). I think that one can still use Paypal.

Aside from the above, and the fact that the total number of hits is wrong (should be around 42,000 instead of the present listing of
02000 (just my vanity!), AND that the 2006 itinerary is not posted (son Jon's procrastination), everything's fine. At least I'm alive!
Thanks for all your helpful suggestions...I'm saving them.

Looks like it happened in April three years ago, so she must have had a three-year subscription on the domain name.
I combined the threads and clarified the thread title, and sent Jean an e-mail.

That is old news (2006), Chance, though you got me scrambling around for a little while, there.

As far as I know this is simply the same domain issue.

Does anybody know how to find the IP for Jean Ritchie's Website? I looked on several sources, and what I find is the current IP of www.jeanritchie.com, after it expired and was disassociated from Jean's Website. I'm wondering what the IP used to be, and whether the Website is still working under that IP.

In the meantime, you can view archived editions of the Website at http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.jeanritchie.com
