The emblem of our local amateur theatre is a gnu - so we see a play by gnus about every month. Does that count?

Momma always said it was okay to play with gnus as long as we didn't fire them - at least - not without a good barbecue rub.

I knew this fellow who wanted a 'different' pet...so he looked all over, including wild animals parks for something interesting to adopt.
Finally, he discovered a place who had a Wildebeest who was getting on in years, and needed extra care and was in danger of being 'put down'.

Well, his sympathies were aroused, so, having a ranch with some space, he offered to adopt the poor thing and care for it.
It generally prospered with extra care, and seemed to be doing so well that the guy thought he'd try some interesting training...so he made a little obstacle course, and attempted to show his new pet how to jump a fence, run thru a tunnel, and slide down a slide. Sadly, this proved a bit much for the elderly old thing.....so he thought maybe some simple stuff like begging, rolling over, or playing dead would be easier. He tried for weeks, but the bewildered Wildebeest just stood there, waiting for feeding time and being uncooperative.

Being a kind soul, the man finally gave up and just petted 'ol Rover..(did I mention he had named it Rover?) and fed it and allowed it to wander happily about his yard for the rest of its days....

The guy was, of course, mildly disappointed that the training had not worked out, but he managed to console himself when he remembered the old adage....

"You can't teach an old Gnu dog tricks."

It's okay to play with gnus, but you need to remember that gnus have a tendency to overindulge a bit. Gnus are frequently guilty of "PWI" (Posting While Intoxicated). If you are playing with a gnu and you say something to him and his reaction seems to have come from someplace way out in left-field, he's probably knee-walking drunk. He will look at his post in the morning and be all nice and apologetic.

Tis true you can play with a gnu. Tis true you can play with a stewed gnu. Tis true a stewed gnu might rue something misconstrued and apologize in the morning. A gnu is the the same as you, who just wants to do right by you. It's the Golden Rule. Drink a little bud... chew a little cud... get down tonight.

Good Gnus

(A Vignette in Verse)

When cares attack and life seems black,
How sweet it is to pot a yak,
Or puncture hares and grizzly bears,
         And others I could mention;
But in my Animals "Who's Who"
No name stands higher than the Gnu;
And each new gnu that comes in view
         Receives my prompt attention.

When Afric's sun is sinking low,
And shadows wander to and fro,
And everywhere there's in the air
         A hush that's deep and solemn;
Then is the time good men and true
With View Halloo pursue the gnu;
(The safest spot to put your shot
         is through the spinal column).

To take the creature by surprise
We must adopt some rude disguise,
      Although deceit is never sweet,
         And falsehoods don't attract us;
So, as with gun in hand you wait,
Remember to impersonate
      A tuft of grass, a mountain-pass,
         A kopje or a cactus.

A brief suspense, and then at last
The waiting's o'er, the vigil past;
A careful aim. A spurt of flame.
It's done. You've pulled the trigger,
And one more gnu, so fair and frail,
Has handed in its dinner-pail;
(The females all are rather small,
         The males are somewhat bigger).

-- P. G. Wodehouse.

Hugh (The Gnu)

I knew a Gnu, whose name was Hugh
He liked to dine on new-made stew
(Old stew, he knew, just grew and grew
(And soon became an ICKY goo)

The company he kept were few
A Cow, a Ewe, a Kangaroo
They liked to chew his new-Gnu stew
And wash it down with old-Gnu brew

While mostly happy, Hugh DID rue
That everywhere he looked, his view
Was always flat. Was never new.
Oh, what an AIRBORNE Gnu could do!

One night, as Cow and Ewe and Roo
Discoursed with him on ground-based Gnus
He had an inspiration: GLUE
Could help him soar into the blue

His friends seemed MORE than pleased
('tis true)
To smear their spunky chum in goo
And soon Hugh's hue shined like a shoe
Deep dipped in dripping Daring-Do

Then chicken feathers, all askew
Were stuck onto the sticky Gnu
Who climbed high when the day was new
To LEAP and BEAT this Gnu taboo

Hugh flapped, and jumped, and
Yelled out "FOO!"
When earth made a hard rendevous
But stubborn like an old tattoo
He climbed again, to fall anew

When falls had reached some 32
The aches and pains HAD to accrue
Hugh's body felt no longer new
He muttered "ouch!" He sobbed "boo hoo."

He took one final look (or two)
Of space that he could not pursue
Knowing that his Gnu debut
Had simply left Gnu residue

A lesson learned: One hard but true
The land is perfect for the gnu
And now Hugh's outlook took its cue
From just how pretty was his view

The mountains, streams, and grasslands too
Shone bright with light in morning dew
And were as beautiful below, as through
The eyes of animals that flew.

The Cow, the Ewe and Kangaroo
Picked off Hugh's feathers three by two
He said one smiling, light "adieu"
Then went home, not to stew

But stew.

Ode to the Gnu

The gnu is quite a placid beast.
Of all God's creatures, not the least
Nor the most, in size or scope.
He has no use for lengths of rope
And will not frolic in the sea,
Or even deign to climb a tree
If by a lion he's predated.
The gnu is quite uncomplicated.
His looks are somewhat less than fair,
And so for looks he has no care.
In fact, I doubt he thinks a jot
Or worries much about his lot.

'scuse me. Oops. Sorry. I had to come back-can't seem to find my keys....

uhmmmm....that bride?

That is what she would have liked to do, but there really wasn't time. Shotgnu weddings tend to be rather hurried affairs.

This thread reminds me of the songs of my youth. Songs like Tom Paxton's

...gnus, gnus, ain't that gnus,
Ain't that somethin' to see,
Gnus, gnus, talk about your gnus,
That's might good gnus to me.

and Phil Ochs album "All the Gnus That's Fit to Sing" and even Simon & Garfunkel's song "Seven O'Clock Gnus/Silent Night."

Michael Flanders and Donald Swann wrote a delightful ditty known as“The Gnu Song” as part of their 1960 musical At the Drop of a Hat.(There's a 3.1 MB mp3 file of the “The Gnu Song” lurking on the Web disguised as a zip file, but please don't tell anyone you heard about it here.)

For a lovely archive of F & S lyrics and related information, pay a visit to Flanders & Swann Online.

As kids we sat in rapt attention, our eyes gnued to the tube as Neil and Buzz walked on the moon. The gnus of the glanding was a tonic for a weary world. John and Martin and Bobby had all been gnued down in their prime. Jimi and Janice and Jim Morrison and Brian Jones would soon depart this world but not one of them was a gnu sniffer.

Gnu puns are hard to come by. In the words of the BareNaked Ladies, "Its all been done... before. But if we apply ourselves we can add diferent flavourings, gnuances, if you will, to existing puns. This gnu milieux come out of the blue through thought so thoroughly tried true with gnuance can seem fresh and gnu.

As this thread will wind down in the near future, as all threads do, I think it may be time to gnucleate.

The gnucleus of this thread is not a gnudnik, gnudzh, gnudzh, wink wink. Nay, far from gnugatory, this gnugget is no gnuisance. Certainly not a gnull character, and far from gnumb. Granted, a bit of a gnumskull by times, but gnumen at times, although seldom. I do not purport to be gnumious, rather, only gnummular, well gnummular. And, as always, gnuts.

I guess that's about it, in a gnutshell.

MAY MORNING GNU.... one of my all time favs... especially as sung by Kevin Connef... in that little church... in the Chieftans video...

How pleasant in winter to sit by the hob
Listening to the sounds and the bark of a dog
Or in summer to wander the wide valleys through
And to pick the wild flowers in the May morning gnu

Summer is coming, Oh, Summer is near
With the leaves on the trees and the sky blue and clear
And the small birds are singing their fond notes so true
And the wild flowers are springing in the May morning gnu

The house I was born in is but a stone on a stone
And all round the garden the weeds they have grown
And all the fine neighbours that ever I knew
Like the red rose have perished in the May morning gnu.

God be with the old folk, they are all dead and gone
And likewise my brothers, young Denis and John
As we tripped thrugh the heather, wild hares to pursue
Our joys they did mingle in the May morning gnu
