Thank you guest - much more entertaining than the real Wimbledon!

I agree eric. Yellow dot squash is far more manly. Especially when I played at Uni. In the real Canuck version of squash, lets are not let... if you don't allow your opponent clear access, you end up on the floor... if you block the T, you end up with a bad bruise in the small of your back (depending on the score, of course, when playing for beer).

I believe the correct term is "Tennis anyone?", as the inquisitor is poised on one leg, the othe bent behind, and the racket held aloft, looking for all the world as a modern Hermes (Mercury) delivering a message to the gods. Sorry, that ball was just out; my point.

Rugby is a game played by men with odd shaped balls, but it's still better than tennis.

It takes leather balls to play rugby... the game they play in heaven.

But... yellow dot squash is still, by far, the most physically demanding competition sport on earth... besides warfare.

I tried tennis a couple of times. I was out there in short pants, whacking my balls around, getting them caught in a net, and my opponent shouting things like "Four, Love!" at me. And I won't go into the perversion called "mixed doubles" -- I leave that to your imagination.

Rap, I'm sorry- your life might be much different had you only understood him correctly. He was shouting "For LOVE!" Tennis players are famously romantic.

Stop poohpoohing Tennis. It is a game that can be as competitive and demanding as any sport. It demands strategy to set up a winning sequence of shots. Any by the way, it is great for keeping the cardio in shape. What could be wrong with that? I've made some great friends playing tennis and even an enemy, something else was going on with that wack-o. Don't play for LOVE but for Win, Set and Match. Pumps the adrenaline. Wish I had begun as a child but for my age group I'm stronger and better fit than before I played. Anyone notice the money the top players earn? Wouldn't a win at any pro level be a nice payday? Tennis, heck yeah!

Guest bflat, if you wash and dry your cardi properly it will stay in shape by itself.

bflat... yeah. You are right. Simply put, when two, top of the game players or teams, are pitted evenly against each other, the physical and mental demands are irrelevant of the game.

A thought, however. Boxing starts out at even. Any others? And, I do not consider a coin toss to determine who plays first to be an even start.

Dear eric the red,

How do you wash and dry your cardi? I haven't the slightest idea but you seem to know to to keep the shape. Suggestions?

Dear gnu,

Do you think golf might qualify as an even start?

Well that's it over for another year. Talent, style and a predictable outcome.

The highlight had to be the shots of Andy Murray's dad sitting with his new girlfriend. Without doubt, she had the best pair of tennis balls in Wimbledon 2008.

Can't wait until new year !

Anyone for tennis ? - This is what it's REALLY all about: the following song from one of my favourite musicals of all time, "City of Angels", duet sung by Stone & Alaura - always makes me grin:

THE TENNIS SONG

You seem at home on the court [Stone]
Let's say that I play around [Alaura]
Well you don't look like the sort
       My hidden talents abound.
A competitor hasn't been found to defeat me
I'll bet you're a real good sport
Shall we say the ball is in your court ?

I'll bet you like to play rough
I like to work up a sweat
And you just can't get enough
I'm good for more than one set,
But I promise I'll show no regret if you beat me
My backhand is clearly my forte
Shall we say the ball is in your court ?

       No-one every plays with me
I thought your next of kind did ?
My husband never plays with me,
       He's to easily winded
You leave me breathless, too
Wait til our match is through

I may lack form and finesse
But I warm up in a jiff
      It's not exciting unless
      The competition is stiff
I think I understand your racket
I'm not in your league
But you can hack it !
The game commences with love
Well, I think love is a bore
Let's give the tempo a shove
And raise the stakes a bit more
      One thing I'm positive of
It's time for someone to score !

Tell me how you like to play
On grass or clay and every day
They're both OK
      But time is running short.
      Darling, let's don't dilly dally
Ready for a rousing rally !
Shall we say the ball is in your court ?

Poem 195 of 230: MUSING ON WIMBLEDON - SUMMER 2002

2001 got somewhat cheeky,
So, on my T.V., I was pleased to see
Old-fashioned etiquette about the net...
But oh! to get among the coaching set.

Thus, here is a feature that I'd teach:
Two-hands each side – either off when can't reach.
And, as for thoughts on pay, I do not say
"Amateur play" but "spread-out the outlay."

I have to say I went this year and had a hilarious time!! We saw Le Conte and Bahrami which is always hilarious.

It's def much more enjoyable in real life, and to have seen Laura Robson win the juniors and the Williams sisters win the doubles....and to get within 2 feet of Nadal and Federer.....what more could a girl want????
