morris dancing on the radio

BBC Radio 4, "Open Country", early this morning (22 April), was about the village of Ilmington in the Cotswolds, and included morris dancing. It is repeated on Thursday at 1.30 pm, and probably on the 'listen again'.

There is nothing new under the sun. Sheffield City MorrisĀ“s first ever dance was on Radio Sheffield. 1975!!

It's better on those old mahogany-cased valve radiograms, the new plastic curved top boom-boxes are too slippery to keep your footing

There was a wonderful 1/2 hour play on Radio 4 (I think) called 'Morris on the Somme' about a Morris team that all joined up in WW1 together. I'll not give the plot away in case anyne wants to try and catch it again:-) Very good though - Lots of Morris music in the background. Mainly 'Constant Billy' if I remember rightly.

Cheers

How do you all fit on to - and just how many of you fit? Is it philosophically like angels dancing on the head of a pin?

I searched for "Morris on the Somme" and found it listed on a John Kirkpatrick site. It was in 1991, so not on "Listen again". Maybe it should be repeated - isn't there an anniversary coming up?

The first time I heard morris on the radio it was Mayflower (Women's clog side) in about 1982, doing the Abram circle dance. They finished by debagging the presenter, who had been persuaded to stand in the middle of the circle. They do say the pictures are better on the radio!

Having Morris dancers on radio can't be so daft. Some may remember when the BBC regularly featured a ventriloquist on the radio during the 50's.
That was Peter Brough and his puppet (dummy) was called Archie Andrews. Or maybe we were all dummies for listening?

Was it 1991, Topsie? Whew! 15 years and it feels like only yesterday...

Funny you should mention Abram in the same post - I play concertina for the Abram Morris dance! Every June in and around, believe it or not, Abram:-) We dance out on the last Saturday starting at the Abram Morris dancers ground which has now been restored almost to it's former glory.

I morris danced on the radio once, but I was drunk at the time and soon lost my balance and fell off.

I have sometimes felt like putting on me clogs and dancing on the radio (usually when I hear politicians on the Today programme).
Guest- Andy, Yes we did have Peter Brough on radio, the reason being he was such a bloody awful vent that it was the only medium where you couldn't see his mouth move.
However, consider this, the following performers got their first major Radio break in Educating Archie, Harry Secombe, Tony Hancock, Max Bygraves, Beryl Reid, Hattie Jacques. Julie Andrews also featured in at least the first series. Not a bad supporting cast for a wooden top.

I remember hearing "Morris on the Somme" on the Radio back in November 1992 as I was in hospital waiting for a knee operation that kept me from dancing for a couple of years.

Nice piece on Ilmington - my side (Shakespeare) will be dancing with them this evening to celebrate St george's Day.

I was part of a live Radio Humberside broadcast from Beverley FF playing for a morris team back in the early 90's. We were followed by a JUGGLER.....

And now logged on properly...... Around the same time as the above incident at Beverley, and acting as Grimsby Morris Men's PR, I was asked by Radio Humberside if they could come and record our team dancing at 8:00am on a Boxing Day morning - as publicity for our tour later that day. I explained that it wasn't really possible, the team would be in bed/getting up/getting ready/struggling with hangovers etc - but I'd come up with something. What they actually got was my wife and two other friends plus their dog with morris bells on them banging sticks and hopping about while I played melodeon. It sounded totally convincing on the radio, but if only the public had known.....

We quite often have the local radio drop in on us some time between 5.30 and 7.30 on May Day as we dance in various locations round Stratford-upon-Avon.

IIRC the music in 'Morris on the Somme' was provided by the Wheatley MM.

Headcorn "danced in the dawn" on Radio 2 on May day 1971 or 2, at the top of Blue bell Hill, unfortunatly it was very foggy so we did not see the sun come up.The BBC presenter was the tall chap that did Folk on 2 at the time, he had very dark hair.... help having a senior moment cannot remember his name, anyone know?

We were LIVE on CBC Radio in Ontario Canada on Mayday morning a couple of years ago. Their reporter was there with just a cell phone(mobile to some people). It was a rainy morning so my wife was sat in our truck on the opposite side of the road, she could see the reporter talking to John Mayberry and hear it on the radio at the same time.
When I heard the 8.00 news they had another report (not live) and it was our side Orange Peel who were dancing in the background.

Morris Dancing on the radio. That's the only way to fully enjoy Morris Dancing. Music only. Keep those bell jingling, handkerchief waving, stick hitting little pollywogs inside the radio and away from the rest of the world.

Re "Morris on the Somme" - I have a copy.
CD quality it ain't, being an mp3 made from the tape I recorded back in '91 or '92 - all those years ago, anyway.
But it's perfectly legible, albeit a bit bassy due to heavy noise reduction.

PM me if interested.

I think the first time I saw women dancing Cotswold, it was England's Glory dancing Ilmington in Sidmouth (probably at the Horse and Groom). Ruth Fraser, Marian Glover, Jackie Gabriel.....?
