You can nominate 2 or 3 if you wish. I may be able to turn this in to something--assistance much appreciated-- |
24 Apr 06 - 05:02 PM (#1726310) Subject: RE: BS: Song Survey From: Jack the Sailor Are you sure you want this in the BS section? I don't have a best Rebel song. Best religious... "Softly and Tenderly" Best love song "Time in a Bottle" or "I had to say I love you in a Song" by Jim Croce are among my favorites. Songs about everyday life? Chelsea Morning by Joni Mitchell maybe. |

24 Apr 06 - 06:00 PM (#1726358) Subject: RE: BS: Song Survey From: Amos The best Rebel Song is Frank Warner's rendition of the Unreconstructed Rebel. Assuming you mean U.S. Confederacy class of rebel! :D For a religious song, I would think Abide With Me has few competitors, but that's just my opinion. Love songs are so many it is hard to say. I am presently fond of "Say You Will". A |
24 Apr 06 - 07:59 PM (#1726463) Subject: RE: Song Survey From: Midchuck Best rebel song: If you mean US Civil War, "The Last Letter Home." If you mean Irish, either "Rising of the Moon" or "Roddy McCorley." Tie. Best Religious Song would be "Amazing Grace" if it hadn't been so overdone that I'm plain sick and tired of it. "Lone Pilgrim," most likely. Best Love Song: "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Nothing else even comes close, IMO. Peter. |

24 Apr 06 - 09:07 PM (#1726516) Subject: RE: Song Survey From: Richard Bridge Can we add an anti-rebel category? US and/or Irish? Religion? - maybe the Lykewake Dirge - perhaps Dives and Lazarus. Love song? - maybe Love has no Pride, although I have to say there was a song written by a local teenager some years ago near here - an electric song, but it really said it all about young "love", called "I wanna get into your pants". Everyday life? How about Poverty Knocks? |

03 Jan 11 - 04:17 AM (#3066042) Subject: RE: Song Survey From: GUEST,Allan Con Folk have put "Ye Jacobites By Name" and "Flower Of Scotland|" down as rebel Songs! The original Ye Jacobites was vehemently anti-Jacobite and though Burns may have reworked that out of it in his version it still looks to me as an 'anti-rebellion' song. Flower Of Scotland is sung by nationalists and unionists alike though it obviously has nationalist sentiments. I wouldn't call it a rebel song though. It says that those days (ie of conflict) must remain in the past but we can still rise to be a nation again. Surely Williamson was talking about the democratic process. Anti-union rebels of consequence in modern Scotland simply don't exist - at least there are not enough to fill about two phone boxes. Rebel song - Donald MacGillevry Religious - Abide with Me Every day song - Pennies From Heaven Love Song - You're A Big Girl Now (Dylan) Though my choice would probably change in 30 minutes time |

Precisely why I nominated it. There comes a point when it becomes futile to try to sustain rebellion. I think Burns recognised that and by reworking a vehemently anti-Jacobite song in the way he did, he was making a powerful statement. It is a statement about those who advocate violence when there is more to be achieved by peaceful means. |
03 Jan 11 - 09:56 AM (#3066204) Subject: RE: Song Survey From: MGM·Lion Rebel: Irish "Foggy Dew" ["'twas down the glen..."]; or maybe "Johnson's Motor Car". Religious ~~ atheist also, but from my school assembly days [we still had them when I started teaching, the real old sort with hymns to piano accompt!]: "Immortal invisible God only wise"; words by W Chalmers Smith 1824-1908; tune St Denio: best of those great Hymns Ancient And Mid-Victorian! Love song: Oh ~~ "Willie More" comes to mind just now; but tomorrow it might equally be "Magdalene Green" or "Here's adieu, Sweet Lovely Nancy" or "To Know Know Know Her is to Love Love Love Her" or "The Barley and the Rye" - or - or - Everyday ~~ "I'm Bound To Follow The Longhorn Cows"; or "On Monday I Never Go To Work"; or "If it wasn't for the 'ouses in between"... ♫〠Michael〠♫ |

04 Jan 11 - 04:56 AM (#3066811) Subject: RE: Song Survey From: GUEST,Allan Con "There comes a point when it becomes futile to try to sustain rebellion" Maybe I'm missing something but I still don't really get how this could be a rebel song as much as anti-rebel song! Maybe I'm thinking of rebel to literally? I agree that the song talks about the futility of continuing rebellion but as far as I can see it is not about his (ie the personae in the song's) rebellion. Even though he left out the anti-Jacobite vitriol of the original and makes it more of a "lets have some common sense song" it still seems to be written from a Whig perspective. Or at the the very least from a non-Jacobite perspective. Surely the first verse makes that clear. You Jacobites by name, your faults I will proclaim, your doctrines I must blame, you will hear. |
04 Jan 11 - 07:12 AM (#3066887) Subject: RE: Song Survey From: Jack Campin Right now, I reckon the most impressively rebellious songs we've got must be in the genre of Mexican drug-dealing songs (if I knew where to find them and had enough Spanish to make sense of them). Anybody know this stuff? |

04 Jan 11 - 09:31 AM (#3066957) Subject: RE: Song Survey From: GUEST,Allan Con "Jack Campin" Not seen you down in Kelso for a while now Jack! Things have changed a wee bit. We have an early open-mic session in the Ace Centre (it adjoins the ice rink) from about 8pm to 10:30pm then it moves down to the Cobbles for the pus session until closing time. Every Friday as always. The Cobbles tends to be more folk orientated than the Ace but can still be a noisy environment. So there is now a quieter once a month session in the Cobbles on Monday nights too. |

I suppose "cultural" revolution is the only kind of rebellion I have ever been able to identify with. Everyday life? The first one that comes to mind is LIFE GETS TEEJUS, DON'T IT, which is a pretty good song. Maybe BRANCHING OUT by John Gorka. (It's about everyday life if you interpret it as an allegory.) David Bromberg's SOMEONE ELSE'S BLUES is a pretty good description of what everyday life is like when you're dealing with clinical depression. Religious (I guess I'd have to call it "spiritual"): HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING? |
