If you are in London between the 4th and 7th of May , or can get there , Royal Deluxe are performing their show The Sultans Elephant - The show is free and takes place over 4 days and will be spectacular - it involves a fifty foot elephant , a giant girl and a cast of hundreds . The wesite is www.thesultanselephant.com and there's a site here with pics of their show in Nantes here http://www.flickr.com/photos/sbesnard/16000542/.

This is an unmissable ,once in a lifetime event if you like big scale spectacle

Sorry I can't make it.

I'll have to settle for the In-Sultan Elephants in Congress here in Washington DC. Not to mention the Donkey-Hoteys who only seem able to successfully "tilt" with them in the pinball sense.

More than enough Big-Scaly Non-Prescription Spectacles to last me for a good mis-spell, I suppose.....

But thanks for telling me, anyway.

Quite extraordiary. My camera didn't work for the occasion, but nomatter - there are (quite literally) thousands of pictures on flickr - here are just some of them

One of the best things about it was that somehow it escaped the plague of commercial sponsorship - these days you'd expect that it would have been the Natwest Elephant, or the Coca-Cola Elephant, instead of the Sultans's Elephant.

Brilliant.

I would rather assume that all kinds of negotiations had to be gone through to allow them to put on the show. Including digging up the road quite extensively.

Assumption - I have been told - is the mother of all elephants.

It took the organisers Artichoke 3 years to put it all together including raising the funding - 1.5 million 70% of that was from the arts council. The show was supposed to happen last september but was cancelled due to the bombings.

I did hear some noises from people moaning about ther money spent but on the back of the event was a fundraising do in aid of deprived kids - The guests were rich business types 9 million was raised .

As someone who works in street theatre I was enthralled by the show the vision behind it and most of all the sense of community in `London with people hanging out - actually talking to each other and the sheer joyfulness of the event. It also showed me that money is available for street arts - if you have the vision and the will to create shows.

If you want a copy of the soundtrack , I suggest you contact artichoke
artichoke@artichokeproductions.co.uk

They also may know where the show goes next.

Great pictures Sean.

My feet are still sore

They had CDs of the music for sale on a stall, along with T-shirts. If you hunt around the relevant sites you'll probably find more about that.
