BS: Attitude problem?

What is meant when someone accuses you of having an attitude problem?

It means you adopt the wrong attitude to deal with whatever situaution you are in. It can also be a bit like what used to be called 'dumb insolence' in the army.
Sort of personification here

When dealing with situations our attitudes affect the way we react. If our attitude is such that we usually respond inapropriately then we have an attitude problem.

Everyone has some degree of attitude problem which varies from time to time and with the passage of time - not necessarily for the better :0)

They are saying that it isn't the issue as such, but the way in which you are dealing with it, that is causing the difficulty -- that you are being uncooperative, or in some other way adopting a personal approach that is getting in the way.

It's true enough that the way people react to a situation is coloured by the way they are feeling, on that occasion or habitually, and that somnetimes this is more significant than the objective circumstances. Road rage is an example. "Got out of bed the wrong side this morning" is a way of summing it up when it's a one-off.

But "he has an attitude problem" or "you have an attitude problem" can also be used as a method for dodging the question when there is a real issue in play, in a way that is hard to defend against, and it therefore tends to escalate the conflict. I think it's an expression best left on the shelf.

"You're just arguing for the sake of arguing" is perhaps a better way of saying the same thing, without the psycho-babble implications of "attitude problem".

Actually, the problem is not in the person you address, it is in the one who says "You have an attitude problem."

We often hear thing such as, "You need to pick up that mess." "You need to stop doing that." WRONG, More accurate to say , "I need you to...etc"

As in "Your attitude bothers me". If said by one person - their problem. If said by more than one - maybe it's YOUR problem.

You have an attitude problem Roger, and it even comes over in black and white typeface! (Giok) (in the no posting of judgements week thread)

If others may find a problem with my attitude of always trying to say what I mean and meaning what I say - perhaps it is they who have an attitude problem? (Shambles immediate response)

Let me translate Shambles first post:
I want to start a new Shamblecentric thread and hope to attract some other posters by an innocuous sounding question. I can turn the thread later to make my usual point. Nobody seems to open the old thread anymore because it is too long. Let's play my favourite game in a new thread. I think I'll better not link or quote for then it might be too obvious.

Wolfgang -

*Smiles*

If your suspicions were right you would have had the satisfaction of knowing that you were right - had you not already posted, refreshed the thread and turned it into what you predicted it would be.

I have not noticed any reluctance on your or anyone else's part to continue to refresh the longer threads you refer to and post here to complain about.

Could it just be that I wanted some resposes to the question I asked in this thread as a starting point for a discussion?

Subject: RE: BS: Attitude problem?
From: Bee-dubya-ell

"Attitude problem" implies that the expression of one's attitude runs contrary to a goal held by another, usually someone or some entity that perceives itself as being "in charge" and, thusly, with a right to dictate what one's attitude should be. So, what constitutes an "attitude problem" depends on who's calling the shots.

If one works in a used car lot, holding fairness and honesty in higher regard than making money is probably an attitude problem because it means the boss is going to make less money. Conversely, holding fairness and honesty in low regard would be considered an attitude problem for an accountant, a social worker or a judge.

One person's values = Somebody else's attitude problem

holding fairness and honesty in low regard would be considered an attitude problem for... a social worker

I wouldn't bet on that. Social workers who persist in regarding fairness and honesty as a priority, and see their role as primarily to help their clients are liable to be regarded as having "an attitude" problem" by management.

"One person's values = Somebody else's attitude problem" B-D-L

I worked, thank goodness for only a few weeks, in the worst sweatshop situation I've ever seen, for a supplier of car carpets and hardboard car panels. The work pace, catching pieces coming off the press and stacking or boxing them, was often unthinkable. So one day a large ugly gorilla with some sort of foreman's position comes over to the press operator and says, "I don't like the way he's (pointing out a worker) handling those panels." The press operator blurted out, "He's just trying to keep up". The gorilla leaned over him and growled, "You getting an attitude?"

As I do. First you accept the realities of the situation - if you can't stand the heat - you don't place yourself in the kitchen.

And you politly carry on simply trying to express and evidence a view that you have been treated unfairly even when others would prefer you did not and despite all the methods they think are fair to try and prevent you from doing this.

IMO this thread could now be conveniently closed because of that.

Sometimes many things appear to be done only because they can.

You know what - for many years until our protectors were shown how to do it - our forum managed quite happly with all threads open.

Posters were encouraged to start and contribute to threads - rather than asking for them to be closed and prevent others from contributing to them.

A different attitude seemed to be encouraged then - than is encouraged now.

27 Apr 06 - 01:10 PM (#1728895)
Subject: RE: BS: Attitude problem?
From: Georgiansilver

I totally agree that attitudes have changed but unfortunately little can be done to change it unless the 'group' wants such change and works mutually for the same goals. I for one prefer things as they were 'a while back' but as with life, one can only move on in the current mode of the group and live with it... or get out of it. I guess I have become a bit thick skinned over time here but I won't become calloused! I try very hard to maintain my 'individuality' as I have seen and personally experienced the Mudcat mob syndrome and would not want to be part of the persecuting aspect of the group. Whether it be Martin Gibson, Me, the moderators or whoever....the group will have its say...won't it!
I enjoy the music section and have learned much from lyrics/knowledge and facts and opinions but I don't visit the BS in an 'involved way' as I feel I would give too much of the inner me away to some who I wouldn't particularly want to know me that well. I prefer to meet 'real people' face to face and can confidently say I have not met a mudcatter yet that I have disliked...and I have met many. This place is unreal as are some of the characters in it....Some find this a great place to role play, some take it seriously, some love to wind others up, some,,,well the list is probably endless but the attitudes will be dictated by the group as a whole overall. Best wishes, Mike.

There is now a 'persecuting aspect of the group'?

Is it because some posters are now seen to wish for some reason to be persecuted - as has been suggested recently?

incidentally, that should have read "permission from you or me to do ....", Roger. "You or I" has to be the subject of the sentence to be grammaticallly correct. Whereas in your sentence, "you or I" is the grammatical object.
