I think that it was a Grandpa Jones song. I heard it on an old cassette that somebody made off HeeHaw back in the day when making audio cassettes off the TV was a big thrill ;-) If anyone can help me out, or just wants to say "yeah I heard that song too, it isnt your imagination", that'd be way cool.
