There's a great John Hartford song from "Morning Bugle" - "Nobody eats at Linepaws anymore"

All I want is the correct spelling of the restaurant's name: Linepaws?
I checked several Hartford sites, and there is no discography.

Francy is correct, I believe. John Hartford was a national treasure, mostly associated with the "Smothers' Brothers Comedy Hour." A shame in some ways, as when I saw him live, he absolutely played that Banjo like it was made for HIM. Whadda guy, and musician. Of course, Deering now features a John Hartford model, with a grenadillo (wood) tone ring.

The man was a semi-genius on 5-string. It is just another DAMN SHAME he was taken from us so soon. He was a consummate entertainer, genuine nice and humble guy (met him once, briefly--very down to earth), and a great picker. It wasn't a case of innovating with his picking style, as refining and taking to new frontiers what preceded him. A mensch in the truest definition of the term. I miss ya, John!!!

Vastly underrated as a singer too in my opinion. What a distintive voice.

Linebaugh's it is.

Being a big fan the late John Hartford I certainly won't diagree with any of the accolades posted here ... he was a national treasure, not only as an artist but as a decent, sincere, human being.

I too miss ya,John !!!

WesleyS said,"Vastly underrated as a singer too in my opinion. What a distintive voice," and I agree. I loved his voice, but he was very humble about it. When asked how he decided what key to sing a song in, he said he just picks where it sounds best on the banjo, 'cause it's never gonna sound great on his voice. One of his songs was called FALSE-HEARTED TENOR and spoke about how he'd love to sing like those high-wailin' Kentucky tenors.

I wasn't aware that he was ever on the Smothers Brothers, but I do remember seeing him on the Glen Campbell show. I think that when I mention his name to non-John Hartford afficianados, they mostly think of Gentle On My Mind.

I've seen him live a few times. The first time was about 30 years ago, at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario before he started dancing and he played sitting down. I saw him at the Mariposa festival about 12 years ago and he put on a great show. I've never met John, but my wife ran into him at Mariposa and asked him to autograph a picture for me. He said I'll do it if you'll come and be my partner at the dance tent, so my wife got to do some folk dancing with John Hartford, and I got an autograph that said,"Thanks for the loan of your dance partner, Jim."

A little more on topic; is Linebaugh's still around?

Here are partial lyrics, gleaned from sound samples.

NOBODY EATS AT LINEBAUGH'S ANYMORE
John Hartford

...Now where can you go to see the country music star?
That's what we come to Nashville for.
No one comes around to play the pinball machine.
Nobody eats at Linebaugh's anymore.

Now the Opry's gone and the streets are bare.
Ernest Tubb's record shop is dark.
And the drunks are gone from the Merchant's Hotel.
Ev'rybody's gone to the park....

...close at nine o'clock and there's nothin' left to do
And nobody eats at Linebaugh's anymore.

* * *

Linebaugh's is mentioned in a long narrative poem by Shel Silverstein called The Devil and Billy Markham, which was published in Playboy Magazine in 1979.

I couldn't find a telephone listing for Linebaugh's in Nashville.

No, my grandfather's restaurant closed in the late 70's. My father and uncle were attorney's and did not want to take over the business. The building has been torn down to make valet parking for Merchant's restaurant, which was a hotel back in the older days. Folks would eat at Linebaugh's, drink at Tootsie's, and stay at the Merchant Hotel.

Where can you go to see the country music stars?
That's what we come to Nashville for.
No one comes around to play the pinball machines
Nobody eats at Linebaugh's anymore.

Now the Opry's gone and the streets are bare.
Ernest Tubb's record shop is dark.
And the drunks are gone from the Merchant's Hotel
Everybody's gone to the park.

Where can you go to see the country music stars,
sittin drinkin' coffee 'til four?
Shoney's closed at nine o'clock; there's nothing left to do.
Nobody eats at Linebaugh's anymore.

Now the Opry's gone and the streets are bare.
Ernest Tubb's record shop is dark.
And the drunks are gone from the Merchant's Hotel
Everybody's gone to the park.

Won't no one hear the phone ring - is Benny Martin there?
Or watch to see who comes in through the door.
'Cept the few that come around again to use the parking lot,
Nobody eats at Linebaugh's anymore.

Now the Opry's gone and the streets are bare.
Ernest Tubb's record shop is dark.
And the drunks are gone from the Merchant's Hotel
Everybody's gone to the park.

Somewhere in the suburbs the Opry plays tonight,
but the people come around to take the rides.
The park shuts up at bedtime; there's nowheres else to go.
Nobody eats at Linebaugh's anymore.
