Many thanks to all who came along for the Paul Simon night

To Bert, Pat, Roy, Jess, Cathy, Bill, Carlos, Keith, Eve, Jeff, Josie, Miriam, Tony, Trevor W, Stevi, Trevor H, John P, Rita, Yvonne, Davina, Geoff, Teresa & Bob - quite a lot

I never knew so much about Mr Simon - I didn't realise he was an Eskimo or was married to a lady from Ealing or he suffered from bad knees or he likes Marmite & cucumber jam sandwiches

Good luck Trevor with your op - see you soon - break a leg

That sounds good news Martin. Or is it a Rossjoke?

Andy Irvine was excellent at Hitchin on Sunday. How on EARTH does he play so many notes so quickly? It was like fast forwarding the picture to real time music. Amazing.

His stories remind me of good ol' Dublin and I fancy another visit. Bull outing? Hen nights?

I hope to go to Dunstable tonight if Bertie isn't off smashing guitars or watching football and will let me share his music stand.

Dunstable............Dublin..........

Dublin..............Dunstable............

Please could you explain 'resident spotlight set' for those of us who always need clarification.

Do you invite people or does 'resident' refer to Bull people... including Barmy Bambi Killers. sob.

oophs - I didn't know the pheasants were revolting

I don't really know what I mean - at present we seem to get about 4-5 regulars come along to the open mic - they/we all seem to do about 4-5 songs each

It's all a bit haphazard, the PA changes every week and sound/quality is not very consistant

I was just wandering if we should offer people 20 minute slots and then pre-book the slots

Then we could advertise a bit who's performing and perhaps get an audience - the spotlights could be open to anyone - any style of music could apply - it need not just apply to residents

Anybody out there want a slot?

I suppose we could run a raffle to pay beer money to anyone who performed - I was thinking of putting a CD together of local performers as a prize

Anybody who wants a demo doing - I've got a mobile recording desk

The folk nights are going very well - we constantly get over twenty people and it's a nice mix of songs and tunes

Hi Ross,

Thinking of coming along to your next open mic.

I'm tryig to develop a non-folk set. The arangements mostly stand up ok with just me and guitar, but I'd like to bring my electronic band and backing singers if that's OK with you.

Catherine - my advise with any instrument is try not use a lot of force. A lot of parts break easier than you think - as you obviously felt, if it is not easy then maybe you need advice at least for the first time you change strings. What bit were you unscrewing? - The tuning pegs unwinding?

John

Hi Ross re the open mic

I can understand your concern about Mikes/PA last time I didn't know Bert wasn't bringing his PA and so was improvising with the portastudio somewhat haphazardly. With a little discussion we can improve on that.

Re attendence/ performance I think we get the same thing if not the same numbers for the open mic as for the Folk/Acoustic - people turn up that want to play and then we get a small audience as well - there are just more people who want to perform at the acoustic nights.

If you want to build the audience that you are right we will need more focused perfomances and a bit more publicity probably.

John

The one esential bit of kit I'm short of is a PA!

I was rather hoping there would already be one there, as there was on the one and only time I've been to your open mic session before.

I wanted to bring my electronic gizmo's to plug into it to try out the backing tracks I've created before I splash out on a PA.

Hi Ross

I'll bring some stuff on Wednesday and improvise a PA.

It will be better than last time - but I'll also think about what I can sort out for one that is better still, for the future.

For Wednesday I'll bring a couple of bass amps and run them off a mixer. I have plenty of mikes.

I have lots of bits - but not a small handy PA. Some where I have 2 2x12" cabs and a battered old 90 watt(hissy) mixer amp. But I'll never get the cabs in the car along with any instruments - no fun then!

I also have the biggest bass amp combo you have ever seen if anybody wants to deafen their neighbours. Free loan to anybody that is getting into grunge or deaf metal. (size of a chest of drawers - 1x15" bass reflex cabinet - very heavy and also top heavy - amp at top)

Anyway see you Wednesday for mayhem

North Hertfordshire's favourite Ceilidh Band LAUGHING GRAVY return on Friday 26th May after a short break, re-vitalised and refreshed, to offer the very best of English acoustic dance music to the renowned Unicorn Ceilidhs.    Based on years of experience, the band's style is firmly rooted in the English tradition, but draws its influences from far and wide. French, Scottish, Welsh and American roots are explored in an eclectic repertoire that gives energy to the dancers, and leads them into the figures and forms of the dances. Featuring fiddle, accordion, melodeon, rhythm guitar and bass, the arrangements combine to keep the dancers up dancing all evening!

Caller for the dance is our good friend and most excellent supporter of the Ceilidhs – GRAHAM AVERY. Graham has a fine repertoire of dances, suitable for both beginners and more experienced visitors.

Unicorn Ceilidhs take place on the last Friday of the month at Hitchin Town Hall, Brand Street, Hitchin. Doors open 7.30 Dancing 8.00 'til late. Real Ale bar. More info from 01582 733113 / 724261

On our livery yard we've just had a borehole drilled for water (our part of worcs quite literally sits on water) paid five grand for the job and up until today it hadn't stopped raining, so I'll be selling water to the south east, at a reasonable charge, of course !!

Is it volcanic?

We only bath once a year, in milk, in Hertfordshire

Worcestershire? Not so much volcanic as lumpy.
Is that once a year - full stop? or just once a year in milk, and the rest of the time in cream, or jam, or ice cream or something else.
Oooooo how about chocolate !!!

That's a good idea

Perhaps we should bath more regularly

I suppose if you used alphabet spaghetti you could write songs as you squished between your bits

John - goats and tethers and circular fields- 102,203,2358 solutions on the interent - a big big 'unsolvable' puzzle. Trust Trevor.

What on earth will he do with my sponsor money?

How many barn owls does it take to knock a man off course?
