02 May 06 - 09:34 AM (#1732019) Subject: BS: Unforgettable Scenes In Movies From: Jerry Rasmussen A few days ago, I picked up a boxed set of movies produced by Val Lewton. Val Lewton? I think it was Martin Scorsese who said that there were three geniuses in the history of the movies: Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney and Val Lewton. At the time when the classic horror films of Dracula, The Wolfman and Frankenstein were being produced, Val Lewton was producing movies on an extremely limited budget, without big name stars. What he produced were a series of classic and near-classic horror movies with no special effects, and no "Monsters." The terror was created by lighting, photographs, music and editing, usually with the cause of the terror never shown. Last night, I watched The Leopard Man. Like most of Lewton's movies, the title was far more sensational than the movie. (For example, The Ghost Ship doesn't have a ghost on it.) And The Leopard Man doesn't have a hokey half leaopard, half man. A leopard escapes from a traveling sideshow in a small mexican town and eludes capture at the beginning of the movie. Early in the film, there is an unforgettable scene... one I remember seeing as a kid, without remembering anything else about the movie, or the title of the movie. A young girl is sent out by her Mother to buy some corn meal and because she is afraid of the dark, the Mother tells her that she is going to lock the door and won't let the girl in until she comes back with the corn meal. When the girl is returning to her house, she is chased by the leopard (although you don't see the leopard chasing her.) When she gets to the door, she starts beating on it, begging her Mother to open it. Her Mother thinks that she is just making things up, until she hears a lot of growling and screaming. By the time she gets to the door, a stream of blood flows out from underneath the door and there is only silence. That scene scared the Hell out of me as a kid. And yet everything was only suggested. But, I never forgot it. As it turns out, two of the other unforgettable scenes in movies that are burned into my brain are from two other Val Lewton movies... The Body Snatcher, with Bellas Lugosi, and The Cat People. Not every unforgettable scene is from a horror movie... I'll add some others... one I just saw on Turner Classics, this morning. You may have already forgotten my unforgettable scenes, and have others of your own. How about rummaging through those dusty corners of your mind and re-running an unforgettable scene of yours? There is another scene in Citizen Kane where one of his elderly employees (name escapes me) is being interviewed. He muses about seeing a beautiful girl on a ferry and falling in love with her although they never met. The image drove me crazy for years because I couldn't remember where it came from. Still plays in my mind at odd times. The opportunity lost? Horror movies? The Haunting. Julie Christie is in bed in a dark room holding her roommate's hand while something tries to get into their bedroom. When the lights come on, her companion is across the room and something is still holding her hand. SHUDDER. |

I always loved the scene at the beginning of "For A Fistful of Dollars", in which the Man With No Name puts on a show of timidly asking the village bullies to apologise for shooting up his mule. In "Support Your Local Sheriff" - possibly the best spoof western ever - there is a wonderful exchange between James Garner and Walter Brennan. "Go and tell Joe Danby I'm coming over to arrest him for murder." "What are you going to do when he kills me?" "Why, then I'll arrest him for both murders." I think it was Mongo, in Blazing Saddles, who knocked out a horse with one punch. |

Newly released on DVD is the excellent Bad Day at Black Rock, where a one-armed Spencer Tracy, who don't want no trouble, is forced to take down a young Lee Marvin and a young Ernest Borgnine at the same time. They were BIG. Also memorable for me is the little girl in Babe screaming bloody murder about her doll house Christmas present. |

The fight scene in Bad Day At Black Rock, along with the fight scene in Shane are the two most memorable movie fights I've seen. Both still excite me when I watch them. In Shane, when Jack Palance taunts the guy standing in the muddy street in front of the saloon, insulting the South sticks with me from that movie, too... and Brandon DeWilde calling Shane, Shane at the end of the movie. That seen in The Haunting is a very memorable one for me, too. I had also intended to mention the scene where the Wizard of Oz is exposed, but you beat me to it, Bill. Funny how many times I've said, "Pay no attention to that man behind the screen." |

I could take the man but not the pigs and the chickens. YIKES! The Twilight Zone when Shatner opens the curtain on the plane and something has its nose pressed against the window. I shrieked so loud that my father came in and turned off the TV. The little girl gnawing on Mommy in Night Of The Living Dead. The little boy hiding in the latrine in Schindler's List. French Fries up the nose in A Fish Called Wanda. The Blueberry Girl in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. And Willie's first appearence - the cane, the limp and the the somersault. The monster erupting from a man's stomach in Alien. Interesting that all the memorable moments involve something bad. |

Three more frightening ones: The Scene in The Cat People where the woman is swimming in an indoor pool at night and the lights go out. She hears a panther growling, and pacing around the edge of the pool, but once again, the only thing she actually sees is the shadow of the panther. In the Body Snatcher, there's a scene near the end where the Doctor who Boris Karloff has been supplying cadavers to until the Doctor finally kills Karloff is driving a horse and carriage on a treacherous mountain road in a thunderstorm. He has a cadaver of a woman that he has just dug up, which keeps falling over, with it's arms flailing around him. The Doctor is going mad, and when he looks at the cadaver of the woman, it is Karloff, wildly flailing his arms in a deathly embrace. The scene in The Magician where the Doctor is in the attic doing an autopsy, and an eyeball falls in his inkwell. Triple Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jerry |

My male friend is gay. Us two women AREN'T. Almost ANY scene in "Deliverance"--esp. the scene where Burt Reynolds takes charge, shoots an arrow into the "squeel like a piggy, boyah!"guy. A great movie I will watch even if it shows up on some late-nite cable show. The scene in Almost Famous where the whole bus is singing along with Elton John's "Tiny Dancer." What a GREAT flick!! Chevy Chase going 100mph in that stupid snow-dish in Lampoon's "Christmas Vacation." A Riot. Then I tried to think if there was something else that exceeded it or even came close, and no such luck. The scene is from Goonies!, of all movies. And the greatest scene is where the little fat kid has been captured by the bad guys, and he's threatened with death or worse if he doesn't tell everything. They mean about the location of the treasure, of course, but he's not too bright, and is so scared he babbles on about everything he ever did wrong, like sticking bubblegum in a girl's hair, and eating boogers, and all those good things. The "horrible" confessions just keep bubbling out of him! The most threatening of the crooks looks at his brother crook and says, "I'm gettin' ta like this kid!" Absolutely unforgettable! There was an old (1950s/60s?) version of "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" where the cop is searching the room and the hand(attached to the arm and body) falls out of the chimney, ALWAYS makes me jump!!!! The storm at sea scene in "Das Boot" it is the closest I've ever seen on film to what a Real storm at sea is like!!! Hal singing "Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do" The sword fight in the rain at the end of "Seven Samurai" |

I was just thinking about adding it to this thread (and thinking to myself, "why add another movie that nobody's gonna remember?") when I ran across this mention. Can't believe it. But I was going to mention it for a different scene. The scene where the bad guy busts into the jailhouse and points his pistol at James Garner (the sheriff) demanding the release of a prisoner in the jail. James Garner calmly leans over and sticks his finger in the end of the pistol's barrel. The outlaw starts complaining, "Hey, you can't DO that! It might backfire and hurt me!". James Garner says, "Well, it ain't gonna do a hell of a lot for my finger neither." There's a little known movie -- a remake of the story of Silas Marner with Steve Martin as the lead. In this movie there's a scene wherein Martin's character has had a tough emotional setback. Late at night, in the very dim light of the house, Martin sits in a window seat, backlit by the moon, and plays a clawhammer version of...."You take the high road, and I'll take the low road, and I'll be in Scotland before you" (whatever that tune is...he plays it instrumentally). I could relate. I can hardly imagine hard times without an instrument to comfort me. I like the "I'll Say A Little Prayer For You" scene in "My Best Friend's Wedding". I love the scene with the young bicyclist tooling around Bloomington Indiana to the soundtrack of Rossini's Overture To The Barber Of Seville. |

Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles taking off Dietrich. The battle on the ice, from Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky. Every scene in Lady with the Little Dog (1959) - beautiful. A cliched classic,DESERVEDLY, the Odessa steps sequence from Battleship Potemkin. Marx Brothers film (which one?) where Harpo eats a whole plate of diced vegetables, one die at a time, at top speed, without a miss. Keaton, when a house collapses all round him, but because he was in the doorway, he remains unsxcathed. Too many. I'll be back. Ivor |

The scene in "Dr. Strangelove" where General Jack D. Ripper talks about the communist conspiracy to pollute "our precious bodily fluids." The scene in "The Shining" where it is revealed that Jack Nicholson has been typing the same sentence over and over. It's where you realize, without any doubt, that he really is crazy. |

When he brings in the baddie and tells him not to step over the line - the guy laughs and says, "there's no bars - hey, what's that red stuff on the floor?" Garner quietly says "The last guy who stepped over the line" - baddie sits quietly in cell! "Cool Hand Luke" the Plastic Jesus song just after he sees his dying mother for the last time - done as a slow paced tear jerker! |

"Yes, Grandfather" "Oough...sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't" (Little Big Man) "Anything happens, anything at all, your fault, my fault, nobody's fault, I'm gonna blow your head off" Richard Boone speaking to John Wayne and later John Wayne speaking to Richard Boone in "Big Jake". One of the more fascinating scenes I recall was in "Wrestling Ernest Hemingway". Robert Duval, playing the role of a Cuban barber, shaves Richard Harris. The scene was incredible in how it portrayed the depth of tenderness and care in the friendship between the two characters. The entire sequence of Jesse Jame's wedding is worth watching for the music. Highlander - where McLeod cuts off Aman Fasil's head. It's only a few minutes into the film, and up to that moment you think McLeod is going to content himself with something like etching a small "Z" into his opponent. |

In the movie "Blazing Saddles", it was Alex Karras (Detroit Lions) that knocked out the horse. I loved the farting scene in that movie. There are so many that I will could go on and on. The rape scene in "Rob Roy" and the follow up where Jessica Lange walks out into the water troubled me like almost no other scene I had ever watched. Dustin Hoffman's whole performance in "Rain Man" I could pick a dozen scenes from that movie where every inch of this man's body was acting the role. Amazing performance. Funny one. Came from a movie that I believe was called "The Stunt Men" with Brian Keith and Burt Reynolds. They are in a bar and a brawl breaks out. At one point Keith gets thrown out through the door. He is sitting next to Reynolds on the ground, and is obviously upset. He mutters something on the order of "that's no way to get thrown out of a bar" and gets up and goes back in the bar. A minute later he comes flying out the window in a shower of broken glass. "Now that's the way to get thrown out of a bar" sez he. I loved it. All the best, Mick |

There are a number of fine moments in "The Electric Horseman", speaking of Robert Redford (and Jane Fonda). The best is at the end when she turns to him and says, "Norman, did you ever think it was going to be so difficult to get rid of a pain in the ass like me?" and he replies, "Ma'am, you have no idea." They are both impossibly beautiful, Fonda is at her most beautiful ever. Speaking of Fonda, her frightening scene in "Klute" is to me the greatest thing I have ever seen in the movies. The second greatest is the redemption scene in "Redbeard". There is a lovely moment in "Grand Hotel" when Greta Garbo falls in love with John Barrymore. He turns slightly away from her and she looks at him with inexpressible tenderness, as if he were some kind of glowing object, some implausible salvation. There's a sad scene in "Brazil" where Jonathan Pryce is trying to escape from the Gestapo-like police of the future and a girl tells him he can take this car that's sitting there so Pryce thanks her and jumps in but notices how sad-faced she is so he asks her, "What are doing here?" and she says, "I'm waiting for my daddy." Pryce just nods and continues on his way. If you saw the movie, you know why it's a sad scene. |

Then the great shots in the church of him pressed against the glass looking down on the ceremony with the light behind him, and screaming her name, the expressions of hatred on the face of Mrs Robinson, you can see her mouthing obscenities at him but you can't hear what she's saying. Then when he uses a large crucifix to jam the door shut, and they run off, and catch a bus, with her still wearing the wedding dress. It is just pure drama/entertainment from beginning to end. Giok |

He sits for awhile, then suddenly starts banging the keys, then slows down and asks for translation, from the host, to a ballad in french, about saving the trees for the children. Funny scene. A tear jerker for me was in Project-X with Matthew Broderick and Helen Hunt. The scene where they put the old chimpanzee into a test aircraft area, testing to see what happens to pilots after a nuclear explosion. You watch the old chimp start to die. If I remember right the chimp smoked cigarettes and he wanted a smoke. Anyway, very emotional part of the movie for me. |

The entire film is told in black and white stills, and narrated. The memorable scene is when the protagonist sees the woman he loves. The still showing her sleeping face gradually becomes a movie, and you notice her breathing while she sleeps. Doesn't sound like much, but in context, wow! [La Jetee was later remade as a color film by Alan Resnais--a terrible film, a terrible waste-- called "J'Etaime, j'taime." And it was also the basis of the Terry Gilliam movie, "The 12 Monkeys."] Doug |

A couple of movies that I didn't see were "High Noon" (Gary Cooper) and "The Villain" (Kirk Douglas). Neither had just one scene that stood out, but each had several memorable ones. I'd have to go back to early in the thread to second "Bad Day at Black Rock" as a most unforgettable movie. I saw it first at a fairly young age, and like most I remembered the fight scene. Perhaps I just had a better understanding of "how things were" when I saw it again - perhaps 10 years ago - when it really sank in why Tracy was in Black Rock. I will continue to consider it one of the most memorable movies ever, but for perhaps slightly more mature(?) reasons now. John |

"Ed Murrow" says, "The terror is in this room". And the close-up at the end of one of "Ed"s broadcasts when the mouth tightens and the eyebrow quivers. John Henry Faulk (daddy) had a great story: when he was a kid, his mama was a butter-&-egg woman(sold those items to folks further out in the country without chickenyards or dairy cows). One day, she's out in the barnyard doing maintenance work--raking gravel, etc. Daddy and a friend are playing Texas rangers/deputy sherriffs on hoehandle horses with thumb/firstfinger 6shooters, racing around causing a ruckus. They chase a bad guy into the henhouse with appropriate whoops & hollers. A large blacksnake, enjoying the egg bounty in the upper tier of nest boxes, gets curious about all the fuss, raises up head and upper body to look over at the boys. 'Bout then there gets to be a boy-shaped hole in the side of the henhouse, and 2 not-so-big kids are scrambling around in the dust & gravel yelling scared. My grandmother helps them up, brushes them off, digs gravel out of their palms, tut-tuts, and allows as how she thought she was under the protection of the great Texas Rangers(lawmen, not sports team) and Travis County sherriff's posse. "Don't you know a black snake can't hurt you", she asks them. "No, ma'am, Miz Faulk", responds daddy's friend. "but he can scare you so bad, he make you hurt yo'seff." Molly Ivins tells this story almost as good as daddy. If you're ever around her, ask her if she remembers it and will tell it. Tw |

Butch piles a huge amount of dynamite under and around it and lights the fuse. Everybody hides behind the embankment and the entire train car is blown to smithereens. As the money floats down all around, Sundance turns to Butch and deadpans, "Think you used enough dynamite there, Butch?" |

I have bad memories of a childhood vacation at Leech Lake Minnesota, so that scene is a metaphor for having the courage to face unpleasant tasks that must be done. Jeff Smith |

They are not polite to the pretty barmaid, and it begins to look nasty. But they stand her up on a table & ask her for a song. She begins to sing "Der Treue Husar", and soon all the soldiers are humming along. I cannot even recollect the scene without crying. I found out the name of the song because it was on a CD, and I inquired about it on rec.music.folk, and a German looked it up for me.
