Does anyone know if there is anywhere to listen or sing these days? Years ago we went to the Arran folk festival but I have not seen or heard any music the last couple of times we've been. |

It was more whether there was anywhere to play. I have since discovered the Arran Folk Club and the festival that takes place the week after I leave which is a classic case of poor timing! |

From: Leadfingers When I was on Arran twenty years ago , there was live folk every night of the week in various pubs and hotels ! Usually locals being paid to do the 'Scottish' song , so only to pleased to see another singer or musician turn up , so that could justify doing something different . And its a beautiful island to visit . |

Aly Bain's coming soon. Google and word of mouth will tell you more than the tourist board. Are there any other Mudcatters on Arran? And are there any who'd like to form a jug band? Jazz Gillum, Noah Lewis, Yank Rachell types most welcome. I've got a one-off line-up for a birthday gig, using the name Midge Coil and the Repellents, and I'd like to get a steady band going again. Names such as Jug Squad spring to mind. |

31 Jul 06 - 12:49 PM (#1797843) Subject: RE: Any music on Isle of Arran these days? From: Nick I can highly recommend the Session on a sunday in the Ormidale (it's a McEwans sponsored session). I went and played when I visited in May and found the people who run it to be really welcoming and friendly. Nice mixed evening of Songs and tunes and I really enjoyed myself. Chap who runs it (whose name I unfortunately can't recall) is a smashing guy. There was also the beginnings of an evening at the Douglas Hotel on a Wednesday evening (if I remember) but I don't know whether that will have got off the ground - the woman running the hotel was individual one might say. The Kildonan evening is more a couple of guys playing than a joining in thing - or it was when we went. There is a hotel in Lochranza where music is played on an ad hoc basis I believe. There is a guitar hanging up ready to be used and they are happy for people to play I believe. |

From: DoctorJug The Lochranza Hotel does indeed have a guitar hanging on the wall ready to be used, and the bar has a good atmosphere. The village hall hosts a family ceilidh every Thursday this summer, featuring the Boguillie Band (pronounced Boglie). Less than two miles away, the Catacol Bay Hotel is a fine place to stay and to eat. There used to be music there but it's more of an eating place now. Incidentally, Mrs. Scarecrow and I got married in Lochranza, had the reception and a brief honeymoon in Catacol, and now live in a nearby village. |

If his tastes haven't changed he might be up for a jug band. He used to have a pretty wide musical range when I was there in the sixties. Lot's of good memories musical and otherwise. |

From: dozy rozy I have spent a number of summers visiting arran and there most certainly is a healthy folk scene.The sessions are at different locations, and tend to be more frequent during the summer.There is a regular Thursday night session at the Eden Bar , Whiting bay, in the summer that is particularly friendly and very enjoyable.
