He was born in 1919 according to the Merlefest program, where he took part in the "Ribbon of Highway Endless Skyway" tribute to Woody Guthrie. And he still inspires.

How do I know my youth is all spent
My get up and go has got up and went
In spite of it all I sit here and grin
And think of the places my get up has been.

Pete wrote this when he was 39. Thought he was getting old!
Nice one Pete.

Folkiedave... you and I must have been in the same audience at Manchester Free Trade Hall when Pete brought a log on stage and showered the first six rows of the audience with wood chips demostrating how a work song would have been used.
That was the night that I realised I could sing, in spite of all my family said.
I'ts nice that some of the great ones are still with us! Many more Happy Birthdays, Pete.

There is nothing that anyone can say that would not be a cliche as well as being an understatement. Personally, he has been an inspiration and a teacher. In an age where role models (outside of family of course) are becoming fewer and fewer, Pete has always been there.

I think the true measure of any individual is to look back at what they have given us and left for others. While not one to rest on his laurels, Pete should take pride in all the work that he has done and for giving us the tools to carry on.

Happy birthday Pete!

A large, generous life well lived. Among many other things, the the song, "We Shall Overcome" found its way to the Civil Rights Movement through Seeger:

On Labor Day weekend of 1957, the Reverends Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ralph David Abernathy heard Pete Seeger sing a song they had never heard before. After a visit of barely three hours, the two ministers had to leave for an engagement. During the drive, Dr. King kept humming the tune and recalled its name, "We Shall Overcome." "There's something about that song that haunts you," he told his companions.

Happy birthday, Pete.

Dylan called him the Saint. Even as a non religious person, I know what he meant.

As Dylan also said (of Woody Guthrie), "he taught you how to live", very true of Pete. Glad he's still with us and hope he remains with us for many years yet.
