OLE'!!!!
A different perspective

On May 1st, as a result of the Mexican boycott, national retailers
reported 4.2% lower sales for the day, with a 78.8% reduction in
shoplifting.

Buenos dias!
tarheel    lol!

I'd like to see documentation of that shoplifting percentage. Sounds like pure bigotry to me.

And what about mango-picking, tarheel? That's the part that really concerns me.

Of course its pure bigotry. I'd heard on a different thread yesterday that tarheel made an offensive racist joke, and I was bummed because I like racist jokes, any race, gender, ethnicity, heritage, religion, orientation, I like them all equally! But this is not even reminiscent of a joke.

Tarheel just made an offensive racist joke here, heric--and, typical of tarheel, it isn't much of a joke, it's just offensive. That's what inbreeding does.

Speechless and extremely disappointed. Maybe not speechless - tarheel, doesn't your Jesus care about the mexicans, whether saints or sinners? Why don't you?

As a southerner who has embraced principles of equality, I used to get offended by the attitudes expressed by people like Tarheel. Now I'm just thankful most of them will be dead in a few years.

I did some research on shoplifting last night. One thing I found was that a lot of shoplifters belong to a group of which tarheel is a member, namely, senior citizens.

I also found out that the sites that provide instruction on how to reduce financial losses from shoplifting do not mention "Mexicans" as being a significantly greater risk for shoplifting than any other ethnicity or nationality.

Shoplifting is a serious problem, and isn't really very funny. Bigotry is also a serious problem and it's not at all funny.

That explains why my 87yr old mother-in-law and friend (around the same age) where stopped and checked by the security in their local Walmart. Of course they didn't steal anything, and certainly wouldn't .. but overall somewhat cruel as these ladies were very shook up.

"A lot of shoplifters"???   What is "a lot"?

Does that mean 10%? Seeing how many shoplifters there are, that's a lot.

Does that mean 20%?   That's more, but is it "a lot"?

50%? Now if you said 50%, that would not only be "a lot", but it would probably be significant.

Even 1% is a lot of shoplifters.

If you gave SOME measure it would be helpful. "Most"? "Nearly all"?
The preponderance"? "A larger proportion than their presence in the population"? Those might mean something.

But "a lot"?   No. Completely meaningless. Merely designed to have something to hit Tarheel over the head with.

If I remember correctly, Dave, it's over ten percent, but under twenty.

tarheel, I don't think you would find similar jokes very funny if they were being made at your expense.

Problem with jokes like that one, tarheel, is that if they are repeated often enough (and they do tend to get repeated quite a lot), people start to believe them. And when that happens, it's not a joke any more. It's a tragedy.

Shouldn't jokes be funny?

I just read that opening post by tarheel as an alleged statistic, not as a joke. If true nothing to laugh about, if false - which I take it to be - pretty nasty.

Tarheel - I'm not even Christian and I know this tune from childhood,

"Jesus loves the little children

All the children of the world

Yellow, red or black or white

They are precious in his sight

Jesus loves the little children of the world.

How can a person claim to be a Christian and make malicious jokes about minorities? Most people learn to put themselves in the other guy's shoes when they are about ten years old.

Tarheel, have you ever heard about the Golden Rule?

Don't sweat it, Tarheel.

I got a laugh out of it.

Just like what Davy Crockett said whenever he looked over the walls of the Alamo and witnessed 4,000 mexicans running towards him.

"Where'd all those roofers come from?"

Oh come on.

You guys need to take the big stick out of your butts.
It's a little thing called humor. I think your local college may offer some classes you can take to help you recognize what it is.

Lighten up...life is too short to be so serious all the time.

Racist "humour" is never funny, especially "humour" that stereotypes groups as criminal or otherwise socially offensive. Or do I have to tell you a joke about a thieving, smelly Jew to get you to understand?

Whoa, wait a minute. My grandfather died in a concentration camp.

Some things are just not funny.

Note to tarheel and Susu's Hubby. Nothing, I repeat, nothing is funny about your jokes. You have shown yourself to have absolutely no sensitivity to others at all. Racism, and jokes about concentration camps don't cut it here. You have forever changed my view of both of you.
