I noticed this announcement on H-Net, a history e-mail forum:

Description: Exhibit on Rabbit Foot Minstrels to Open in Port
Gibson, Mississippi June 30, 2006. A new exhibit of pictures,
stories, costumes, music, and sound pays tribute to the

Robbie Robertson of The Band referred to Wolcotts Rabbit's Foot Minstrels in the The Last Waltz.

also of interest in Mississippi:

"The Center for the Study of Southern Culture and the Division of Outreach and Continuing Education are sponsoring the second annual Music of the South conference on the University of Mississippi's Oxford campus, June 2 & 3, 2006.

"The program will explore the origins of Southern music, discover how each Southern region produced its own sound, and learn how Southern music influenced the rest of the nation. Guests will hear presentations by leading scholars, enjoy live music performances, and tour the Blues Archive at the J. D. Williams Library. Nick Spitzer, host and producer of NPR's American Routes radio program, will present the keynote address. We'll offer catfish and brass bands, good company and a good time. Won't you join us?"
