Heard this song only once ... perhaps in 1969 or 1970- female artist singing of the courting of a girl named Janet. The only lyrics I now recall are ..."he has made her the queen of the land that she will ride in one summers day" and " May I please marry your daughter Janet?" Would greatly appreciate help with title and rest of song.Thanks.

Enter into the search box in the upper right hand corner, Willie O Winsbury, it's in the database(DT). Barry

May I recommend Dick Gaughan's version of this song. It's on his solo album Gaughan on Topic (still available as a CD). I haven't looked at the lyrics in DT, but the version he sings (with excellent guitar accompaniment)has some typical Scots dialect that can be hard to understand.

Bee Willie O' Winsbury is a fave of mine as well, I reccomend Mary Byrne's version. Dick Gaughan's is a fine version as well. depends on your take on the song, the gender of the storyteller and all. I always wanted to hear Ronnie Drew sing it my self.

Thanks Don, I cannot wait to hear such a recording after all these years- ( I was a pre-teen at the time). I still wonder which female artist I must have originally heard...Mary Byrne?... have you any details about which album/cd it would be on? Thanks in advance, BeesWing

P.S. the audio sample provided in the data base, though delightful, bore no resemblance to my reccolection of the melody.*S*

I'm guessing it was on a Pentangle album with Jaqui McShee (?). I think the recording was Solomon's Seal. John Renbourn also sang it on one of his later recordings.

Bees,

Mary Byrne has a classic Irish soprano voice. I think the album is called Come By The Hills. On the same album is Darcy Faro, Lilly of the West, Crooked Jack Captain Kidd. etc. There is a minimum of instrumentation and what is there is very tatseful.

With a message to my EMail address, I could tell you how a copy could be obtained.

I think I am a very fortunate guy...I live where various women...none well-known...have sung that and other fine ballads for years...I probably heard it 3-4 times live before I found it on record!!
