BS: need names for an Ice Cream Parlour

17 May 06 - 01:00 PM (#1742434)
Subject: BS: need names for an Ice Cream Parlour
From: Mr Red

I was asked to come up with names for an Ice Cream Parlour in Weymouth

I have a lot of them but there are always words we miss - like "sundae" so I am hoping the lateral anterior lobes are lobing tonight.

here are a few of my ideas.

Lazy Sun Daze
Dense Cone Sensation
          and my old favourite
Aston Vanilla - a good licking.

I scream, you scream, we all scream, for ice cream.

Yes, I know it's too long, but "What's The Scoop" has already been suggested. And, "Cold Nut Sundaes" is childish. And, a pic of a flat-bottom cone with a scoop of strawberry ice cream and the caption "Lick This" is bound to offend.

Overall, I like Amos's suggestion. And, I hate myself for being so silly.

As in Häagen Daz, the use of a diaeresis or umlaut or other such embellishments seem to make the consumer believe that the product is exotic, which gives it a certain "je ne sais quoi", so go with some name that has one or more of these and the customers will beat a path to your door.

Forget about the cutesy monickers. Give it a very sensible, businesslike name. Why? Because the vast majority of similar business ventures wind up going belly up after a year or two. Then they wind up in bankruptcy court trying to get a judge to allow them to pay off their creditors at 10% of face invoice value. Judges don't like "cute". They like "business".

However my mind is still wrestling with this tricky one. Last night before mudcat dissolved

I was going to suggest something historical about Weymouth

or maybe go for the arts council grant

It's not just judges that like a business-like name. Customers do too.

When a person passes a shop, she ought to be able to tell what kind of business it is. The name also ought to be easy to find in the phone book. (That leaves out most cute spellings and foreign words.)

I have a very successful ice cream shop in my neighborhood. It's called "Murray's Ice Cream."
----------
This comment is not related to the ice cream shop, but here's a dumb thing people do in naming businesses: use initials, such as "W.J. McBride's Bar and Grill." Everyone then calls it "McBride's," and nobody can find it in the phone book because it's under W.

Ever had one of those weeks where Murphy's Law was working overtime?
A week where you spent every moment wishing for the weekend?
Well now you need never wait again!
Come have a some ice cream at "Sundae in the Park" where every day is Sundae!

Remember those good old days? Sunday afternoons spent in the park with your family? Picnics on the lawn and the music from the band stand? Begging your father for money for the ice cream man?
Well we're bringing it all back at "Sundae in the Park".

well, I like it anyway.

Thanks Folks

The proprietor has built-up a national package-deal travel company and sold-out to a partner. And retired in his early 40's! I think the business side is covered. He is looking for a hobby and there is a reason to be in Weymouth. He has been on an Ice Cream course so all he needs now is the name with pzazz.

He will get the printout this weekend and he may even post here, I do hope so.

Sorry.... but there's a REASON to be in Weymouth? I lived within 8 miles of it for half my life and never found a good enough reason to be in it... (apart from the heady days of my 14th summer when I found my first love and would gladly have lived under the pier with him... There is no pier now, both it and my first love have gone to that marina in the sky).

Scoop was the first word that came to mind when I read the thread title. Short and sweet.

Whatever you choose, DON'T spell it in an odd way or use foreign words people can't pronounce. I have seen many people (in my yellow pages advertising job) kill their business by spelling the name in a way people can't look up in the phone book. Getting cute with kountry instead of country made Kountry Flowers look like it was out of business when people didn't find it in the phone book under Country Flowers. Sure enough, it went out of business.
