19 May 06 - 07:51 AM (#1743816) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: freda underhill Giok & Hrothgar This humour thing is very complicated - I know that sometimes my Australian sense of irony flys right past people from some other countries (at present I'm staying in austria) and I have to be careful. I noticed on another thread Ebbie commenting about people's dismissive comments of epileptics, voicing her concern at implications that they were mentally ill. I wanted to comment on that thread but didn't - it's a bit like black jokes and Irish or Polish jokes - the attitude of the person commenting rings through. As the recent purchaser of a new hip, I think Giok is in a good position to make one legged jokes, and i always enjoy his outrageous jokes. I hear many dreadful jokes that I laugh at and find funny. But sometimes there is an element of cruelty or ridicule - whenever a joke moves into ridicule or sadistic enjoyment of someone's hurt, that's when my politically correct hackles rise. In this case, yes, I loved the Beatles and and it seemed too personal. and BTW, an Irishman came into the pub, and shouted drinks all round because his wife had just given birth to a big, healthy baby boy. The new father was very proud, the baby was a beautiful baby and weighs 25 pounds. Everyone was very impressed (though his wife was still finding it difficult to walk properly) and drinks continued all through the evening. The next week the man came back again, even happier because the baby had been given a thorough check by the doctor and was doing very well, and was weighed at 17 pounds! The people in the asked why the baby had lost so much weight, if he was doing so well, and the father explained that he had just been circumsized.. freda (running out the door) |

19 May 06 - 03:51 PM (#1744107) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: Desdemona My goodness, what a lot of excellent follow-ups to my harmless & not even especially clever one-liner...! But seriously , no-one here has a close, personal relationship with Sir Paul or his gold-digging, publicity-seeking child bride (do they??), and celebrity is always fair game for a bit of fun; I suppose it's the flip-side of making $1.5 billion by choosing to live your life in front of the world. Obviously, I don't wish either of these COMPLETE STRANGERS ill (NB that they are, in fact, COMPLETE STRANGERS to me, hence my lack of deep, personal feelings about them!), I just think it would be pretty disingenuous to pretend that: A. It never occurred to anyone that his vast, enormous fortune (to say nothing of the fame, which "Lady" McCartney had assiduously and cravenly pursued ever since her admittedly unfortunate accident) *might* have been a factor in their marriage. B. The fact that he hooked up with her within a year of the death of his beloved wife of nearly 30 years doesn't have at least a whiff of "terribly depressed older man on the rebound being taken advantage of by attentive, attractive much younger female" about it. C. This ridiculous claim that "the media" are to blame for their break-up could be taken seriously! I must respectfully point out that (present company excepted, apparently), particularly as compared to the circumstances of his marriage to Linda in 1969, no-one gives a toss about Paul Mccartney or anything he does anymore, and I feel pretty certain they could have had all the (largely forgotten by pop culture) privacy they wanted if they'd have just stopped shoving their faces in front of cameras. D. That there's any reason to pity poor Heather, except for the fact that her 15 minutes are about to be UP! She lost me way back when in some interview where she claimed she had "never even heard any of the Beatles music" (thereby deflating accusations of gold-digging, apparently)...so are we to assume she grew up in outer space?! 20 May 06 - 08:57 AM (#1744440) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: John MacKenzie I bet many of the PC posters anonymous or otherwise laugh at TV programmes like The Office and Fawlry Towers. The basic premise of these programmes is to mock and laugh at obsessive compulsives, and socially inadequate people. Were your next door neighbour to behave like Basil Fawlty, Alan Partridge, or some other OTT caricature would you laugh at them? Surely this would be mockery, so why not complain about these TV caricatures on the grounds that they portray inadequate personalities, and we shouldn't laugh at them? Most people have their foibles, and are mocked for them, even in many cases the sufferer mocks themselves, should we stop them laughing at themselves? Yes many things are PC nowadays and we no longer laugh at them thankfully, but there is no reason apart from smug self righteousness for denying human nature on the grounds of political correctness. 20 May 06 - 02:29 PM (#1744569) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: Desdemona Yes, how come it's suddenly okay to make fun of "big, sweaty fat people"? I think the whole issue of humour and what "makes" something funny is enormously fascinating, and just attended a really interesting session at a (medieval, but the topic transcends chronological periods, really) conference on this very subject. The usual argument is that there are several "types" of joke/humour: ~ the sort in which there's an assumption of superiority on the part of the hearer/teller; ie, we're laughing "at" someone or something ~ the sort in which the humour is based on incongruity: a pun that makes a word mean something other than what's usual, an unexpected occurrence, etc. This is a "victimless" humour, even a baby laughing at a game of peek-a-boo can fall into this category...Mummy's ther, now she's not there, now she's back... ~ and then there's just pure pleasure: the laughter that happens watching kittens play, or flying a kite, just having fun, etc. In a way, I think it's just the (occasional, as I *do* revere language & its possibilities!) inadequacy of words that allows us to use the same term to describe these very diffrenet things...the fact that the end result of each is often laughter is in many ways the only thing they have in common. But it can't be denied that a good laugh is one of the very best things about the human experience, although we may have a wide variety of ways of finding one. Cheers, ~D |
20 May 06 - 03:40 PM (#1744611) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: Peter K (Fionn) McCartney and Mills have been subjected to a torrent of bitching in the Brit press. If certain mudcatters need to add to that, I suppose they have every entitlement. For most of my seven years here, Mudcat was an interesting forum, so I shouldn't complain. But I do find it hard to stomach Desdemona and Giok rebranding their bitchiness as the high watermark of British humour. Perhaps they haven't noticed, but money is not the biggest thing in McCartney's life. He sent his kids to state schools and he seems perfectly happy for Heather to have a couple of hundred million. What a peculiar attitude, the cash-obsessed must think. Bruce Baillie: If you think there's any merit in disabled people wanting to be treated as human beings, try to move on from the "we" and "them" mindset, in which "we" equals normal people like you, and "them" equals those who fail your normality test. |

21 May 06 - 12:20 PM (#1744716) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: Big Mick Giok, I stayed out of it because I didn't find it funny. That is until the arrogant one, on one hand criticized and on the other made her comment. And when I mixed it up with a comment made the other day about hijacking her thread, when s/he has done it consistently for a number of years...... well I just couldn't resist. Mick |
21 May 06 - 12:42 PM (#1744735) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: GUEST Both of your above posting prove that you REALLY don't get it. And mick if the cat is missing and you feel like lashing out, save it. As usual your facts are all in your mind and bear no relation to the truth. |
21 May 06 - 12:47 PM (#1744738) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: John MacKenzie What I really don't get Guest is what you get out of sniping anonymously at people, all it does is make you look like a sad coward who hasn't the guts to post under your own name. I agree they should make the BS members only, then you will have to put up or shut up! G. |

21 May 06 - 01:05 PM (#1744750) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: GUEST Giok your taste in funnies I find distasteful. And I posted such. You weren't the only sap making these comments, but of course as can be expected you were the one to start beating your chest. Not only to me but also to the other posters who found this thread in bad taste. If that is your idea of sniping live with it. Your 'put up or shut up' comment is laughable. We don't all agree with you. Carry on insulting those of us who don't agree with you. It speaks volumes. I will bow out now as this thread isn't about you. |

21 May 06 - 01:12 PM (#1744756) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: John MacKenzie Goodbye then Guest, I do know the thread isn't about me, but you personalised your critique. I'm sorry if you don't like my style, but I will always stand up for myself and will not back down in the face of anonymous sniping. As I disagree with many people, I also expect them to disagree with me, that's life. You can't please all of the people all of the time, and anybody would be silly to try. Giok |

I'm sure this is no novel idea. This gal kinda *looked* a bit like Linda. You don't go through as many years as they had, and the cancer, and death, and come out on the other end unscarred. Wouldn'tve mattered WHO it was he'd marry--I'd have give the relationship 3, mebyee 4 years. My heart kinda goes out to them both--I suspect it was "cursed" from the beginning. My 2 cents on this one--probably up for debate, but I'd bet I'm 90% on. :>) |

31 May 06 - 10:24 PM (#1750927) Subject: RE: BS: Looks like Paul McCartney... From: dianavan I'm certainly not going to make fun of a person with one leg but... I knew it was the end when I saw how she had persuaded Paul to wiggle around on the ice. I doubt if Canada and the seal pups were Paul's idea - he was just trying to please his bride. I think you can only go so far trying to please another. That stunt must have been pretty humiliating, especially when Paul revealed that he didn't even know what province he was in. At his age, he deserves to live with his dignity intact. Why prostate yourself for a cause you know nothing about. If Heather wants to pursue the landmines problem, good on her. She should leave the seals alone until she knows more about it and stop dragging others into unknown territory. |

Or even shit on someone who is obvoiously a no mind idiot raving aboutst, prattling on about something they haven't a clue about? How fuckin PC are we supposed to be? English Common Law says you have the right to wave your arms freely in the air... you know the rest. Apparently, so do the seals. I really wish she had got bit bad. That would have been far more hilarious than any of the jokes herein. I just can't believe she did not undesratnd that she frightened and tortured that poor baby seal far worse than any sealer. Then again, ya can't blame her... she's a no mind idiot who doesn't have a fuckin clue. Then again, she's got $246M worth of clues more than me, so, maybe I am PI? Gee, $246M USD... I wonder... will she use any of that money to help the sealers improve their lives and get off the seal addiction? Let's see what happens. Although, I don't see why she would now. After all, when she had access to $1.46B (that's Billion with a big fuckin B), and Pauly was supposedly "on board", they did sweet fuck all for the sealers except crap on them and try to take thier liveliehood away. Not allowed to poke fun at such idiots? 1.46 billion US dollar idiots? For $246M US dollars, I will saw my own leg off. And, I won't get upset if someone makes a funny about it. |
