Lyr Req: I truly understand...

Subject: lyric request: I truly understand...
From: Liza Constable

I truly understand that you love another man and your heart can no longer be mine...

Anybody got the rest of the lyrics to this one? I know that Bruce molsky recorded a terrific version, but I can't seem to find my copy, and would also like to find more words and some history of the song. It would be much appreciated if you know anything... thanks Liza

Dear Liza--

The song you seek was recorded by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman on a terrific CD called Shady Grove. It's a really haunting rendition.

The CD booklet has the lyrics.

Hi Liza,
It's been awhile since I've felt like posting lyrics but here is the way I sing this:

I wish to the lord I'd never been born
or died when I was young
Before I'd seen your two brown eyes
Or heard your flattering tongue my love
or heard your flattering tongue.

I truly understand that you love another man
and your heart shall no longer be mine
I truly understand that you love another man
and your heart shall no longer be mine

Oh who's gonna shoe your pretty little foot
and who's gonna glove your hand
And who's gonna be your own true love
When I'm in the foreign land
chorus

Oh pappa's gonna shoe my pretty little foot
and mama's gonna glove my hand
and you'll still be my own true love
When you're in a foreign land
chorus

I'll never listen to what no other woman says
Let her hair be black or brown
But I'd rather be on the top of some hill
With the rain a pourin down down down
With the rain a pourin down
chorus
I learned it in Arkansas and I'm sure my version is an amalgamation (illustrating "the folk process" in all it's glory)...harpgirl
anyone know any other versions?

I have a 1928 recording by Shortbuckle Roark and family which is essentially the same as Harpgirl posted, but the chorus consists of "I truly understand. . . " only once each time. It's also interesting that the "Who's gonna shoe. . ." verse is separated from the "Papa's gonna shoe. . ." by two or three other verses. They also have one additional verse, as follows:

Remember what you said to me

When we stood side by side

You promised that you'd marry me

And be no other man's bride, my love

And be no other man's bride

Liza, Now that you mention it I may have gotten that version from the New Lost City Ramblers recording. Nathan, aren't you an autoharp player? Oh and by the way I play autoharp or buttonharp as I've taken to calling them...harpetta

I wish the Lord I'd never been born
Or died when I was young.
I'd never seen your two brown eyes
Nor heard your flatterin' tongue, love,
(Nor) Heard your flatterin' tongue.

CHORUS: I truly understand that you love another man
And your love will no longer be mine.
I truly understand that you love another man
And your love will no longer be mine.

Now, who's gonna shoe your purty little foot?
And who's gonna glove your hand?
And who's gonna be your own true love
When I'm in a foreign land, love
When I'm in a foreign land? CHORUS

Well, Pap's gonna shoe my purty little foot,
And Ma'am's gonna glove my hand,
And you'll still be my own true love
When you're in a foreign land, love,
When you're in a foreign land. CHORUS

I'll never look for you in another woman's face
Or her hair, be it black or brown.
I'd rather stand on top of some hill
With the rain a-pourin' down, down,
The rain a-pourin' down. CHORUS

I Truly Understand – Bruce Molsky

I wish to the Lord I'd never been born,
Or died when I was a baby
Never would have seen your two brown eyes
Or eaten the salty gravy
Or eaten the salty gravy

Chorus:

I truly understand that you love another man
And your heart shall no longer be mind
I truly understand that you love another man
And your heat shall no longer be mine.

Who's goin' to shoe your pretty little feet
Who will glove your hand
Sho's goin' to kiss your ruby-red lips
When I'm in a foreign land, dear Lord
When I'm in a foreign land.

Chorus …

Poppa will shoe my pretty little feet
Momma will glove my hand
Sister will kiss my ruby-red lips
When I'm in a foreign land, dear Lord
When I'm in a foreign land.

Chorus …

Never will take another one's hand
Let her hair be black or brown
Rather be standin' on the top of some mound
Where the rain comes tumblin' down, my Lord
Where the rain comes tumblin' down.

Chorus …

Wish dear Lord I'd never been born
'n died when I was a baby
Never would've seen your two brown eyes
Or eaten the salty gravy
Or eaten the salty gravy

Chorus …
