Lyr ADD: Crepe Suzette (Kenneth Williams)

Subject: Lyr Req: Crepe Suzette
From: Trevor

Is anybody able to help me with Kenneth William's cod-French classic please. It was sung to the tune of Auld Lang Syne and made up of French phrases commonly used in English.

I remember him doing it on 'Parkinson' some years ago but Google doesn't come up with the goods.

Thanks

Stop Messin' About: The Kenneth Williams web site says Kenneth Williams first sang CREPE SUZETTE on The Kenneth Williams Show (Special) on BBC2 on 21 January 1976, and it was written by Derek Collyer.

The forum at that web site might be a good place to ask for the lyrics.

If you get the lyrics please come back and post them here.

Also, I'd like to know where the term "cod-French" comes from.

To cod someone is "to gull, dupe, slang, befool, fool, put on, take in, put one over, put one across or hoax". The more usual word nowadays is to "kid" - no kidding/codding.

So cod-french would be something supposed to sound like French.

Does anyone have the lyrics, please, for the immortal Kenneth Williams' tribute to the French language, sung to the tune of 'Auld Lang Syne'?

The same idea, but done to Piaf's "La Vien Rose"(sp?) is also quite popular (I can recall Judy Small doing it well, years ago) ...

Never heard Kenneth's "A.L.S." though - would be quite a hoot!!

Here in Canada I have heard a hilarious version of the theme from Titanic, by Celine Dion, done in the same way.

I should qualify thet .... It wasn't Celine who did the parody!! She did the original.

Success (of a sort)

A quiet morning at work means I found this on the Internet! Unfortunately it was originally transcribed by someone who didn't speak much French; I've tidied it up, but the first line and the 'bidet' line still defeat me.

Any ideas?

Rusty.

Hi Rusty

Thanks for bringing this to our attention - it's a little gem! However...

Sorry to be pedantic but there seems to be a slight discrepancy between the words of the song given above and what KW is singing on the video clip. It's a bit confusing because although the words are set approximately to the tune of "Old Lang Syne", KW doesn't follow the tune exactly on every verse. On a couple of occasions he stops before the end of a verse, pauses or does a bit of patter, and then goes straight to the next verse – I've indicated these breaks in the transcription below.

Wassail! (Or just this once, "Santé")

I absolutely love this song and I have found that Kenneth does slightly change the words in different performances.
Even his pause
"It's a knockout, inn't it?
The song, not the French!"
He has changed, in "An Audience with..." he says it as above, in a few other videos I have heard him say
"It's a knockout, inn't it?
The French, not the song!"

Hope that helps with the issue of discrepancies. :)
