A Beauteous Light has Gone from this World
Memorial Web Site

My favorite Chantey Sing partner is gone.

After a courageous over 2 year fight with lung cancer, my SweeteeFace is out of pain.

20% (that's 1 in 5!) of women over 40 with lung cancer are non-smokers. The numbers are probably higher, as I see on her death certificate that the doctor (whom I've never heard of) marked "Unknown" to the question "Did tobacco contribute to the cause of death"?".

Take LOTS of pictures of your sweetie!

This one's for you, babydoll:

Ben Backstay
Ben Backstay was our bos'n, A very jolly boy,
No lad than he more merrily Could pipe all hands ahoy.
And when unto his summons We did not well attend,
No lad than he more merrily Could handle a rope's end.
Could handle a rope's end, Could handle a rope's end.

Singing! Chip chow, cherry chow, fa da ra da diddle dow
Chip chow, cherry chow, fa da raddle day
Chip chow, cherry chow, fa da ra da diddle dow
Chip chow, cherry chow, fa da raddle day

One day at sea, our captain, A very jolly dog,
Served out to all the company A double whack of grog.
Ben Backstay he got tipsy, Unto his heart's content,
And he being half-seas over boys, right overboard he went.
Right overboard he went, Right overboard he went

A shark was on the starboard bow & sharks no man can stand
For they do grapple everything, Just like them sharks on land.
We heaved out some tackle, to give his life some hope
But as the shark bit off his head, he couldn't see the rope.
he couldn't see the rope, he couldn't see the rope.

Without a head his ghost appeared, out on the briny lake:
He piped all hands ahoy and said; "Lads, by me warning take:
By drinking grog I lost my life, And you my fate could meet,
So never mix your rum, me lads, but always drink it neat."
but always drink it neat, but always drink it neat.

Thanks for the info, too and the advice on taking pictures. I would also add, tape record the fun stuff as often as possible.

{I detest the disease that took Robi from You and her Family too soon and caused Her so much pain. The same diagnosis took my Mother, she too was a non- smoker.}

I pity those who tread the path and never find one like your Robi, sir. Can you imagine going through all we go through in this world, in our lives, and doing so without the absolute love that you seem to have found with her? Congratulations on your great good fortune to have known her, loved and been loved by her. You sang together, you created a life together.

I wish there is something I could say to help you deal with the grief. I cannot. But I can tell you that I am sorry for your loss, and I am sorry for the emptiness. Based on the great capacity for love that you so obviously possess, I can tell that you that will heal ...... later.

God be good to her,

Mick Lane

So many things to say, or write or quote. At times like these, mostly insufficient. A profound, soul-shattering loss no doubt. But there is good news in that many of us believe this is not simply an end--but also a beginning. You will be reunited. My prayers and condolences as well. Words, at a time like this, seem so inadequate, but it's all we have.

A singing partner and a lover--NOT an affordable loss. So sorry. Don't stay too much alone. While there's not much friends and family can do for the grief(but hold the extra tissue), they CAN watch for signs of shock and take care of you when that occurs. Hang on.
I *H*A*T*E* the C-word. Let's find a way to make it obsolete--just a dictionary listing that ends up, "...no traceable incidence in population planet-wide."

I just got back from Robi's Memorial Celebration (I refuse to use the "F" word). There was song, joy and friendship. A funeral parlor is an unusual place to hear a sea chantey, but I lead her favorite (Ben Backstay) to an enthusiastic crowd. Later, at the dinner (OOFF! So much food!) we had a mini chantey sing. We had Weapons of Musical Destruction and audience participation! I got several comments where folks said that I throw a great funeral Memorial Celebration.

My family, my friends, my co-workers & my cats will get me thru this.

Pix (scads of them) will be posted shortly.

An sweerie (sweet & eerie) happening this morning.

Last night, I brought home the flowers that I got for Robi and put them where I thought the kitties wouldn't get at them. When I woke up, I went looking for Fuzzee (her favorite cat), as Splotch and Minnie were in bed with me. I found Fuzzee asleep on the top of the glass cabinet, basically right over her urn, guarding the flowers! He has NEVER perched up there before! He sniffed at them, but otherwise didn't try to disturb them. He is an extraordinary cat! I amended the website to include the pictures of this amazingly loving cat!

Vince,

So sorry to hear about your loss of a beloved and wonderful wife and the loss of a friend to all who knew her. Your love and devotion have been constantly evident since I've known you, and it must be an unspeakable viod in your life. I did not get back from the UK in time to make the service, or you know I surely would have been there.

My best to a friend, in loss of another...

Thanks Severn

You'll be glad to know we sang "Ben Backstay" at the Funeral Home. I hope it surprised the Funeral Director to hear a Sea Chantey right on the the heels of "In the Garden".
